Chapter 3 - COLE RANSOM

Grant called hospital security.
The man across the street climbed into his truck before officers reached him.
The vehicle accelerated through a red light and disappeared into traffic.
Eli shook violently when Grant showed him a photograph taken from the security camera.
âThatâs Cole,â he whispered.
Grant sat beside the hospital bed.
âIs Cole your father?â
âMy stepfather.â
âDid he lock you inside the minivan?â
Eli glanced toward the door.
He looked like a frightened child expecting punishment for telling the truth.
I pulled a chair close to him.
âYouâre safe here.â
âNo place is safe when Cole is angry.â
âWhat happened to your mother?â Grant asked.
Eli swallowed painfully.
âMom found something in his office.â
âWhat did she find?â
âPapers.â
âWhat kind of papers?â
âI donât know.â
Eli rubbed his wrists.
Dark bruises circled both of them.
âShe put something inside Graceâs blanket.â
Grant and I exchanged a glance.
âThe memory card?â I asked.
Eli nodded.
âShe told me that if we got separated, I had to give the blanket to the police.â
âWhy didnât you mention it before?â
âCole said he would hurt Mom if I told anyone.â
Grant leaned forward.
âWhen did you last see her?â
âThis morning.â
Eli explained that Mara had packed a diaper bag and told him they were leaving immediately.
They reached the minivan, but Cole appeared before they could drive away.
He dragged Mara toward his black pickup truck.
Then he shoved Eli and Grace into the back of the minivan and activated the locks from his phone.
âHe said Mom had made a terrible mistake,â Eli continued.
âHe told me the heat would make everything look like an accident.â
Grantâs jaw tightened.
âDid anyone help him?â
Eli hesitated.
âA police officer.â
The room became completely silent.
âWhat did the officer look like?â Grant asked.
âHe had a brown mustache.â
âDid you hear his name?â
âCole called him Travis.â
Grant stood abruptly.
I saw recognition in his eyes.
âDeputy Travis Ransom,â he said.
âColeâs older brother.â
At that moment, Grantâs phone rang.
He listened for several seconds without speaking.
Then he turned toward me.
âThe minivan has disappeared from the evidence lot.â
âWho took it?â
May you like
Grant looked at Eli.
âThe security camera was disabled by someone wearing a county deputyâs uniform.â
