Chapter 13 - THE PEOPLE COLE CONTROLLED

Cole’s arrest opened a door that fear had kept closed for years.

Women began contacting Grant’s department.

Some had lived in housing managed by the nonprofit.

Others knew Cole through financial counseling programs.

They described the same pattern.

He offered help.

He learned their secrets.

Then he used those secrets to control them.

One woman said Cole threatened to reveal her location to an abusive former husband.

Another said he demanded money to keep her immigration information private.

A third family reported that important documents disappeared after Cole visited their apartment.

Mara realized he had used her position to reach vulnerable people.

The discovery nearly destroyed her.

“I introduced him to some of those families,” she told me.

“You didn’t know what he was doing.”

“I should have known.”

“You survived him.”

“That doesn’t erase what happened.”

“No.”

I sat beside her in the hospital courtyard.

“But it means you can help expose it.”

Mara agreed to cooperate with federal investigators.

She provided passwords, names, and transaction histories.

The stolen funds had traveled through companies controlled by Cole and Travis.

Some money had also been sent to a county judge named Malcolm Voss.

Judge Voss had signed suspicious custody orders against several women connected to the nonprofit.

He had also dismissed complaints filed against Cole.

The investigation was no longer about one violent man.

It was about a network.

Grant warned us that people involved in the scheme might try to destroy evidence or intimidate witnesses.

Hospital security increased again.

Eli was moved to a private rehabilitation center under police protection.

Grace remained with Mara in a secure family unit.

For the first time since the rescue, I went home.

My apartment felt unnaturally quiet.

I showered, changed clothes, and tried to sleep.

At 2:13 a.m., something struck my bedroom window.

I turned on the light.

A brick lay on the floor surrounded by broken glass.

A photograph had been taped around it.

The picture showed me standing outside the hospital with Eli.
