Chapter 9: The Woman Behind Everything

The words hung in the air like a thunderclap.
Victoria worked for her.
No one spoke.
The detectives stared at Clara, waiting for her to continue.
Julian slowly stepped closer.
"Clara..."
"Who is Evelyn Cross?"
Clara closed her eyes.
For several long seconds, she said nothing.
Then, quietly—
"I met her only twice."
The first memory came back in fragments.
The west wing.
Late at night.
The door opening.
Not Victoria.
Another woman.
Elegant.
Perfectly dressed.
Silver hair pinned neatly behind her ears.
She carried no anger.
No cruelty.
Only a calm smile.
The kind that frightened Clara even more.
"Hello, Mrs. Vance."
The woman had spoken as if they were meeting for afternoon tea.
"My name is Evelyn."
Clara remembered asking only one question.
"Why are you doing this?"
Evelyn had smiled.
"Because people like your husband believe money gives them control."
She leaned closer.
"I'm going to prove him wrong."
Julian frowned.
"Did she ever tell you who she was?"
Clara nodded faintly.
"She said she didn't destroy families..."
"...she redesigned them."
The lead detective immediately wrote the sentence down.
"It sounds like some kind of philosophy."
"No."
Clara looked at him.
"It sounded like a business."
Just then, another detective entered the cabin carrying a cardboard evidence box.
"We searched the attic."
He placed the box on the table.
"You'll want to see this."
Inside were dozens of photographs.
Every one of them showed Julian.
Leaving board meetings.
Entering restaurants.
Walking through airports.
Attending charity events.
Even standing outside a cemetery on the anniversary of Clara's disappearance.
Julian's stomach turned.
"They were following me."
"For years," the detective replied.
"They documented almost everything."
Beneath the photographs lay a thick notebook.
Its cover read:
Behavioral Progress Reports
The detective carefully opened the first page.
Each report was organized by date.
Each page evaluated Clara as if she weren't human.
Week 4
Subject continues asking for husband.
No significant emotional decline.
Week 19
Subject shows signs of exhaustion.
Hope remains problematic.
Month 11
Subject has stopped asking what day it is.
Progress satisfactory.
Emily, who had accompanied the investigators to identify household items, covered her mouth.
"Oh my God..."
The detective turned another page.
Year 2
Subject refuses to say husband's name aloud.
Dependency on routine increasing.
Julian slammed the notebook shut.
"I've seen enough."
A forensic analyst approached carrying another sealed envelope.
"We recovered fingerprints."
Julian looked up.
"Whose?"
"Not just Victoria's."
He spread several comparison reports across the table.
"Marcus Hale."
"Dr. Grayson."
"And..."
He paused.
"Evelyn Cross."
The detective frowned.
"Run her through every database."
"We already did."
"And?"
"There isn't a single record."
Julian looked confused.
"What do you mean?"
"No birth certificate."
"No driver's license."
"No tax history."
"No passport."
"It was as if..."
The detective hesitated.
"...she never officially existed."
Hours later, the investigation moved back to the Vance estate.
Victoria sat silently in the mansion's study under police guard.
She hadn't spoken since her arrest.
Julian entered alone.
He closed the door behind him.
Victoria looked up.
"If you're here to gloat..."
"I'm not."
He placed Evelyn's photograph on the desk.
Victoria's face froze.
A tiny reaction.
Barely noticeable.
But Julian caught it.
"So you do know her."
Victoria looked away.
"I have nothing to say."
Julian leaned forward.
"You kidnapped my wife."
"You forged legal documents."
"You bribed a doctor."
"You imprisoned an innocent woman."
He paused.
"But none of that explains one thing."
Victoria remained silent.
"Why?"
She laughed bitterly.
"You still don't understand."
"Then help me."
Victoria slowly lifted her eyes.
For the first time...
There was no arrogance.
Only exhaustion.
"You think I wanted your company."
"I did."
"You think I wanted your money."
"I did."
"But none of that..."
"...was worth what happened."
Julian's expression hardened.
"So why did you obey her?"
Victoria whispered something so quietly he almost missed it.
"Because I was afraid."
Julian stared at her.
"Afraid of Evelyn?"
Victoria nodded.
Her hands began trembling.
"You've never met someone like her."
"Who is she?"
Victoria swallowed hard.
"You don't find Evelyn Cross."
"She finds you."
Julian felt a chill run through him.
Victoria looked toward the window as though expecting someone to be watching.
"When I tried to leave..."
"They killed my brother."
The room fell silent.
Julian searched her face.
For the first time...
She wasn't lying.
Tears gathered in Victoria's eyes.
"I thought helping her would save my family."
"It didn't."
Julian said nothing.
He wasn't ready to forgive her.
He doubted he ever would.
But for the first time...
He realized Victoria had also been someone's pawn.
A willing one at first.
A trapped one in the end.
Before Julian could ask another question, the study door burst open.
A detective rushed inside.
"Mr. Vance!"
"What is it?"
The detective's face had gone pale.
"We just received a call from headquarters."
He took a sharp breath.
"Marcus Hale has been found."
Julian stepped forward.
"Alive?"
The detective nodded once.
"Barely."
"He was left tied to a chair inside an abandoned warehouse."
Julian frowned.
"Who did it?"
The detective slowly held up a small black card found beside Marcus.
Across the front, embossed in silver letters, were just four words:
YOU KNOW TOO MUCH.
Beneath them was a single symbol.
The same symbol printed on the cover of the Project Echo file.
And in the lower-right corner...
May you like
A handwritten message.
You're next, Julian.
