Chapter 5: The Doctor Who Signed the Lie

Victoria remained on the floor, her breathing ragged as detectives secured handcuffs around her wrists.

The sharp click echoed through the grand hallway.

For years, that sound had belonged to someone else.

Now it belonged to her.

Julian didn't feel satisfaction.

Not yet.

Because one question still haunted him.

She couldn't have done this alone.

An hour later, the mansion's library had been transformed into a temporary command center.

Detectives covered the massive oak table with photographs, financial records, surveillance stills, and forged legal documents.

Julian stood at the center, studying every page.

One detective slid the false death certificate toward him.

"We verified the document."

Julian looked up.

"It isn't authentic."

"It was never registered with the state."

He frowned.

"Then how—"

"It was convincing enough to fool private investigators."

The detective pointed to a signature at the bottom.

Dr. Leonard Grayson

Julian froze.

He knew that name.

Grayson had been the emergency physician assigned to Clara's accident four years earlier.

"The same doctor?" Julian asked quietly.

The detective nodded.

"The very same."

Clara sat quietly near the fireplace, wrapped in a blanket.

She hadn't spoken much since watching the surveillance footage.

Her hands still trembled whenever someone entered the room unexpectedly.

Julian walked over and knelt beside her.

"Do you remember Dr. Grayson?"

She closed her eyes.

At first...

Nothing.

Then—

A flash.

Bright hospital lights.

The smell of disinfectant.

Voices arguing outside a curtain.

"I remember..."

She pressed her fingers against her temple.

"He told me I had a concussion."

Julian listened carefully.

"He said I needed to rest."

Another memory surfaced.

A needle.

Someone holding her arm.

"I wasn't asleep."

Her breathing quickened.

"I could hear Victoria."

Julian leaned closer.

"What did she say?"

Clara whispered,

"'Make sure she never remembers who she is.'"

The room fell silent.

Every detective stopped writing.

The lead investigator immediately picked up his phone.

"I want Dr. Grayson located."

Minutes later...

Another detective returned with disturbing news.

"He resigned two years ago."

"Where is he now?"

"No one knows."

Julian's jaw tightened.

"He ran."

"Looks that way."

Before anyone could speak again, Arthur entered carrying a worn leather ledger.

"I found this in the estate office."

He carefully placed it on the table.

"It's the household expense book."

Julian opened it.

At first...

Nothing unusual.

Food deliveries.

Maintenance bills.

Landscaping.

Then one recurring payment caught his attention.

West Wing Maintenance

Every month.

Exactly the same amount.

For four years.

Julian frowned.

"The west wing wasn't under renovation."

Arthur slowly shook his head.

"No, sir."

"It wasn't."

"So what was this money for?"

One detective flipped through additional receipts.

His expression darkened.

"It wasn't maintenance."

"What was it?"

"Cash withdrawals."

"Untraceable."

Another detective did the math.

"Over four years..."

He looked up.

"Victoria withdrew nearly two million dollars."

Julian stared at the numbers.

"To pay people."

The detective nodded.

"Guards."

"Doctors."

"Lawyers."

"Anyone who could keep the secret alive."

Just then...

Emily appeared nervously in the doorway.

"Mr. Vance..."

Julian turned.

"What is it?"

"I remembered something."

She looked at Victoria, who sat handcuffed under police supervision.

"Every month..."

Emily swallowed hard.

"A doctor came to the mansion."

Julian's heart skipped.

"What kind of doctor?"

"He never wore a hospital badge."

"He always entered through the back gate."

"He never stayed longer than fifteen minutes."

The detective immediately asked,

"Did you ever see his face?"

Emily nodded.

"I think so."

She described him.

Gray hair.

Wire-rimmed glasses.

A scar beneath his left ear.

One detective immediately searched the police database.

Seconds later...

A photograph appeared.

Emily gasped.

"That's him."

Dr. Leonard Grayson.

Julian slowly turned toward Victoria.

"You kept bringing him here."

She stared straight ahead.

Silent.

"You drugged Clara."

Silence.

"You kept her weak."

Nothing.

"You destroyed every chance she had to escape."

Victoria finally smiled.

It was faint.

Broken.

But still cruel.

"I only did..."

"...what was necessary."

The words hit Clara harder than any slap.

She stood.

Slowly.

For the first time since Julian found her...

She walked directly toward Victoria.

Every detective instinctively stepped aside.

Victoria looked up.

Their eyes met.

For years...

Clara had lowered her head.

Not anymore.

"You know what I remember most?"

Clara asked quietly.

Victoria said nothing.

"It wasn't the beatings."

"It wasn't the hunger."

"It wasn't the cold."

A tear rolled down Clara's cheek.

"It was every morning..."

"...when you told me Julian had forgotten me."

Victoria looked away.

Clara's voice became steadier.

"I almost believed you."

Julian reached for her hand.

She squeezed it tightly.

"But you were wrong."

She looked directly into Victoria's eyes.

"He never stopped looking."

For the first time since her arrest...

Victoria's confidence disappeared completely.

A detective's phone rang.

He answered quickly.

After only a few seconds, his face changed.

He looked toward Julian.

"We found Dr. Grayson."

Julian stood.

"Where?"

The detective took a slow breath.

"He turned himself in."

Everyone stared.

"He says..."

The detective hesitated.

"...he has evidence proving Victoria didn't act alone."

The room went completely still.

Julian felt the ground shift beneath him.

If Victoria had help...

May you like

Then the nightmare wasn't over.

It had only begun.
