Chapter 8: The Cabin at Silver Lake

Clara's grip on Julian's arm tightened until her knuckles turned white.

Her breathing came in short, uneven bursts.

The garden around them seemed to disappear.

All she could see was the rain.

The cabin.

That voice.

Julian knelt beside her.

"Clara."

She blinked.

"Look at me."

Slowly, her frightened eyes found his.

"You're safe."

She nodded, but the terror on her face remained.

"I've seen that cabin before," she whispered.

"I just... couldn't remember where."

Two hours later, the investigation team had transformed the library into a war room.

A large satellite map covered one wall.

The lead detective circled a small area north of the city.

"Silver Lake."

"It's about ninety miles from here."

Julian folded his arms.

"Who owns property there?"

The detective shook his head.

"Not Victoria."

"What about Marcus Hale?"

Another detective searched the property database.

"No."

Julian frowned.

"So whose cabin was it?"

Before anyone could answer, Clara spoke.

"There was..."

She closed her eyes.

"...a wind chime."

Everyone looked at her.

"It hung outside the front porch."

"It sounded every time someone opened the door."

She pressed her fingers against her temples.

"There was also..."

"...a grandfather clock."

Julian gently encouraged her.

"What else?"

She swallowed.

"A painting."

"An old lighthouse."

The detectives immediately began making notes.

Across town...

Forensic investigators continued searching Marcus Hale's abandoned office.

One officer called out.

"Detective!"

The lead investigator hurried over.

The officer held up a faded road map.

Several locations had been marked with red circles.

One circle surrounded Silver Lake.

Another note had been written beside it.

Safe House #2

The detective's expression darkened.

"There was more than one."

Back at the mansion...

Julian sat beside Clara in the living room.

Neither of them spoke for several minutes.

Finally...

She reached into the pocket of his jacket.

"I forgot."

She pulled out a tiny folded piece of paper.

Julian recognized it immediately.

One of the notes from the wooden box beneath her bed.

"You never read this one."

She handed it to him.

He unfolded it carefully.

The paper was brittle with age.

It read:

Day 612

Today they took me somewhere outside the mansion.

I heard water.

I smelled pine trees.

Victoria argued with a man.

She kept calling him "Marcus."

He told her Julian was getting too close.

She said, "If he keeps searching, we'll move her to the lake."

Julian slowly lowered the paper.

His eyes met Clara's.

"This wasn't random."

She shook her head.

"No."

"They planned every move."

That evening...

The detectives received a warrant to search every property connected to Marcus Hale.

Most had already been abandoned.

One address remained active.

A cabin.

Near Silver Lake.

Julian stood.

"I'm going."

The lead detective immediately objected.

"Mr. Vance, this is now a police operation."

"I don't care."

"Marcus may still be there."

Julian looked him straight in the eye.

"So might the answers my wife deserves."

Three black SUVs rolled through the forest just before sunset.

Tall pine trees surrounded the narrow dirt road.

The deeper they drove...

The quieter the world became.

Finally...

The cabin appeared.

Exactly as Clara had described.

A weathered wooden porch.

A rusted wind chime swaying in the breeze.

An old rocking chair.

Julian looked at Clara.

She had gone completely pale.

"It's here."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

"This is the place."

The tactical team surrounded the cabin.

"Clear!"

The front door burst open.

Officers rushed inside.

Seconds later—

"House is empty!"

Julian entered carefully.

Dust covered every surface.

Whoever had lived there had left recently.

Very recently.

The coffee mug on the kitchen table was still damp.

One detective touched it.

"It's warm."

Julian's pulse quickened.

"We just missed him."

Clara slowly walked into the living room.

Then she stopped.

Her eyes locked onto the far wall.

The lighthouse painting.

Exactly where she remembered it.

She approached it without speaking.

Something felt wrong.

She reached out.

The frame moved.

"Julian."

He walked over.

"What is it?"

"I don't think this belongs here."

Together, they lifted the painting off the wall.

Behind it...

Was a small steel safe.

The detectives quickly opened it.

Inside were several passports.

Bundles of cash.

A pistol.

And a thick brown file.

The label on the front made Julian's blood run cold.

PROJECT ECHO

"What is Project Echo?" one detective asked.

Julian slowly opened the file.

The first page contained a single sentence.

Objective: Break the subject psychologically until complete dependency is achieved.

Clara's breathing stopped.

The second page...

Contained her photograph.

Taken secretly.

Inside the west wing.

The third page listed detailed observations.

  • Subject still believes husband is searching.

  • Hope level remains high.

  • Increase isolation.

  • Limit sleep.

  • Continue misinformation.

  • Destroy remaining emotional resistance.

Julian could barely hold the folder.

This wasn't imprisonment.

It was a calculated experiment designed to erase Clara's identity.

Then the detective turned to the final page.

At the bottom...

Beneath Victoria Sterling's signature...

Was another signature.

Not Marcus Hale.

Not Dr. Grayson.

Someone else.

The name read:

Evelyn Cross

The lead detective frowned.

"I've never heard of her."

Julian looked at Clara.

She was staring at the signature as if it had awakened another buried memory.

A tear rolled down her cheek.

"I know her..."

Everyone turned toward her.

Julian stepped closer.

"Who is Evelyn Cross?"

Clara's lips trembled.

Then she whispered the words that changed the entire investigation.

May you like

"She wasn't working for Victoria..."

"Victoria worked for her."
