Chapter 6: The Man Who Finally Spoke

The interrogation room smelled of coffee and disinfectant.

Dr. Leonard Grayson sat alone at the metal table.

His expensive suits were gone.

His silver hair was thinner.

The confidence that had once impressed wealthy clients had vanished.

He looked like a man who hadn't slept in weeks.

Julian entered with two detectives.

Grayson slowly raised his eyes.

"I knew this day would come."

Julian remained standing.

"You had four years to tell the truth."

"You chose today."

Grayson lowered his head.

"I know."

The lead detective switched on the recorder.

"For the record, state your name."

"Leonard James Grayson."

"You requested this meeting voluntarily?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

Grayson looked directly at Julian.

"Because I can't carry it anymore."

Julian's voice was ice-cold.

"Start at the beginning."

Grayson took a deep breath.

"Four years ago..."

"...Clara survived the accident."

Julian's jaw tightened.

"I already know that."

"No."

Grayson shook his head.

"You don't."

"The accident wasn't meant to kill her."

The room fell silent.

"What?"

"It was supposed to injure her."

"Just enough to make her vulnerable."

Julian stared at him.

"Who planned it?"

Grayson closed his eyes.

"Victoria."

Flashback.

Four years earlier.

Rain pounded against the emergency room windows.

Clara lay unconscious on a hospital bed.

Grayson had just finished reviewing her scans.

She would recover.

Then Victoria walked into his office carrying a black leather briefcase.

She quietly placed it on his desk.

Inside...

Two million dollars in cash.

"I need her to disappear."

Grayson had refused immediately.

Victoria simply smiled.

Then she slid a second envelope across the desk.

Inside were photographs.

His wife.

His teenage son.

His daughter walking home from school.

Victoria's message had been simple.

"If Clara goes home..."

"...your family never will."

Back in the interrogation room...

Grayson's voice shook.

"I was a coward."

"I signed false medical reports."

"I sedated her."

"I told everyone she suffered severe memory loss."

Julian slammed both hands onto the table.

"You destroyed her life."

"I know."

"You destroyed mine."

"I know."

"You let me spend four years believing my wife was dead."

Grayson couldn't look at him.

"I know."

The detective interrupted.

"After leaving the hospital, where was Clara taken?"

Grayson answered immediately.

"Not directly to the mansion."

Julian frowned.

"Where?"

"A private rehabilitation clinic."

"For six weeks."

Julian had never heard of it.

"What clinic?"

Grayson handed over a folded piece of paper.

The detective opened it.

His expression changed.

"This facility closed three years ago."

"Exactly."

"It wasn't a real rehabilitation center."

"It was a safe house."

Julian felt another piece of the puzzle falling into place.

"So Victoria hid Clara there first..."

Grayson nodded.

"Until the media stopped paying attention."

"Then she quietly moved her into your estate."

Julian's fists clenched.

"My own security never questioned it."

"They believed she was a new domestic employee."

The detective leaned forward.

"You said Victoria wasn't acting alone."

Grayson nodded slowly.

"There were three of us."

Julian's eyes narrowed.

"You."

"Victoria."

"And who else?"

Grayson hesitated.

His hands began trembling again.

"I don't know his real name."

"What do you mean?"

"Victoria never used it."

"What did she call him?"

Grayson whispered two words.

"Mr. Black."

Silence.

The detective wrote the name down.

"Describe him."

"Tall."

"Always wore dark suits."

"Never removed his gloves."

"He handled everything."

"Money."

"Transportation."

"Security."

Julian frowned.

"So he was the one keeping Clara imprisoned."

Grayson nodded.

"Victoria gave the orders."

"Mr. Black made them happen."

A detective rushed into the room carrying a tablet.

"Sir..."

"We just received the forensic results."

He handed it to the lead investigator.

The detective read silently.

Then looked toward Julian.

"The blood from the west wing..."

He paused.

"...is Clara's."

Julian closed his eyes.

There was no longer any doubt.

Every scar.

Every bruise.

Every desperate letter.

Every day she counted on the wall.

It had all happened exactly as she remembered.

Grayson slowly reached into his coat pocket.

The detectives instantly tensed.

"It's okay."

He removed a small flash drive.

"I've kept this hidden for four years."

Julian looked at it.

"What's on it?"

"Everything I couldn't live with."

The detective carefully took the drive.

Medical reports.

Financial transfers.

Secret appointments.

Copies of altered records.

But one folder stood out.

VIDEOS

Julian frowned.

"What are these?"

Grayson swallowed.

"I secretly recorded several meetings."

"You wore a wire?"

"No."

"I hid a camera in my office."

The detective inserted the flash drive into a secure laptop.

The first video loaded.

Victoria appeared on screen.

She was sitting across from Grayson.

Calm.

Smiling.

Cold.

Her voice filled the room.

"Julian will never stop searching."

Grayson answered,

"Then what if he finds her?"

Victoria smiled.

The same smile she had worn in the mansion.

"Then we'll make sure he never recognizes what's standing right in front of him."

Julian's heart stopped.

The video continued.

Victoria leaned back in her chair.

"A broken woman stops looking people in the eye."

"She stops speaking."

"Eventually..."

"...she disappears even when she's standing in the same room."

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Julian finally understood.

Victoria had never intended to hide Clara forever.

She had intended to erase her.

To turn the vibrant woman Julian loved into someone so broken...

Even her own husband wouldn't recognize her.

The detective slowly removed the flash drive.

"This changes everything."

Julian nodded once.

"No."

His voice was steady.

"It tells me something I've needed to know."

The detective looked at him.

Julian's eyes hardened.

"Victoria believed she could destroy Clara."

He stood.

"She failed."

Just then, another detective entered the room, his face unusually tense.

"Mr. Vance..."

"We identified 'Mr. Black.'"

Julian turned immediately.

"Who is he?"

May you like

The detective took a slow breath.

"You're not going to like the answer."
