Chapter 7: The Name Julian Never Expected

The detective didn't speak immediately.

He closed the interrogation room door before placing a thin manila folder on the table.

Julian stared at it.

"Who is Mr. Black?"

The detective exhaled slowly.

"His real name is Marcus Hale."

Julian frowned.

The name meant nothing.

Then the detective slid a photograph across the table.

Julian's eyes widened.

"No..."

The man in the picture was standing beside him at a charity gala five years earlier.

Another photograph.

Marcus shaking hands with Julian outside Vance Holdings.

Another.

Marcus attending Julian and Clara's anniversary fundraiser.

Julian looked up.

"He knew us."

The detective nodded.

"He knew everything."

Marcus Hale had never been introduced as a friend.

Officially, he worked as an independent security consultant.

Whenever wealthy families needed background checks, surveillance systems, or executive protection, his company handled the job.

Julian had hired him twice.

Once to upgrade the estate's security.

Once after receiving anonymous business threats.

Marcus had walked through every hallway.

Every entrance.

Every hidden passage.

Every security blind spot.

Including the west wing.

Julian felt sick.

"I gave him access."

"You did," the detective replied quietly.

"And Victoria took advantage of it."

Across town, detectives executed a search warrant at Marcus Hale's office.

The building was almost empty.

Computers had been wiped.

File cabinets stood open.

Someone had left in a hurry.

Then one officer called out.

"I found a safe."

The steel safe was hidden behind a large painting.

Inside were stacks of cash.

Multiple fake passports.

Burner phones.

And dozens of client files.

One file carried a familiar name.

VANCE

Back at the mansion, Clara sat alone in the garden.

For the first time in years, she could feel sunlight without asking permission.

The breeze brushed against her face.

She closed her eyes.

She had dreamed about simple things like this.

Fresh air.

Birdsong.

Freedom.

Julian quietly joined her.

He didn't speak.

He simply sat beside her.

After a long silence, Clara whispered,

"I forgot what flowers smelled like."

Julian looked at the roses blooming nearby.

His chest tightened.

Four years.

Four springs.

Four summers.

She had missed them all.

"I'm sorry."

She gently shook her head.

"You don't have to apologize."

"I should have found you."

"You never stopped trying."

She smiled sadly.

"That kept me alive."

Arthur approached slowly.

"There was something else."

Julian looked up.

"What is it?"

The old butler held a small envelope.

"I was too afraid to give this to anyone."

He handed it to Clara.

"It's yours."

She opened it carefully.

Inside was a faded photograph.

She immediately recognized it.

"Our honeymoon."

Julian leaned closer.

The picture showed the two of them standing on a beach, laughing as the wind tangled Clara's hair.

On the back was a handwritten note.

If you're reading this, they haven't taken every memory from you. Keep fighting. — Arthur

Clara's eyes filled with tears.

"You knew."

Arthur nodded.

"I couldn't save you."

"But I wanted you to remember who you were."

Clara stood and embraced the old butler.

Arthur broke down crying.

"I've asked God to forgive me every day."

She held him tighter.

"You just helped me come home."

Late that afternoon, a detective hurried into the garden.

"We found Marcus Hale."

Julian stood instantly.

"Where?"

"At a private airfield."

"Did you arrest him?"

The detective's expression darkened.

"We tried."

"What happened?"

"He escaped."

Julian's face hardened.

"How?"

"He knew we were coming."

Silence fell.

Someone had warned him.

The detective continued,

"But he left something behind."

He handed Julian a black envelope.

No address.

No stamp.

Only Julian's name written across the front.

Julian opened it.

Inside was a single sheet of paper.

Typed.

No signature.

It read:

You think Victoria was the mastermind.

She wasn't.

She only wanted your money.

Someone else wanted Clara.

Ask her about the cabin by Silver Lake.

She remembers more than she thinks.

Julian slowly lowered the letter.

He turned toward Clara.

"Silver Lake."

The color drained from her face.

Her breathing became uneven.

Her fingers instinctively reached for her neck.

Then...

A memory slammed into her.

A wooden cabin.

Rain pounding against the roof.

A man's voice she had never forgotten.

And one sentence whispered in the darkness:

"If Julian ever finds you... he'll die next."

Clara gasped and grabbed Julian's arm.

"I remember."

Julian's heart pounded.

"What do you remember?"

She looked into his eyes, terrified.

"They didn't keep me alive..."

"...just to hide me."

A tear rolled down her cheek.

May you like

"They were waiting..."

"...for the right time to use me."
