Chapter 8 - THE CHILDREN BEGIN TO REMEMBER

Sophie refused to speak to Daniel after the airport.

Max still asked when Dad was coming home.

I arranged a child therapist.

Daniel accused me of turning the children against him.

The therapist documented the opposite.

Sophie was angry because Daniel asked her to keep secrets.

Max was confused because Vanessa had encouraged him to call her Mama V.

They had attended dinners with Vanessa for nearly a year.

Daniel told me he was working late.

In reality, he brought the children to her apartment.

Sophie remembered Vanessa measuring her for the ceremony dress.

She remembered Richard saying their “real family” would finally be complete.

She remembered asking what that made me.

Nobody answered.

The therapist asked whether Sophie had seen medication in the apartment.

She drew a small blue bottle.

Vanessa once told Daniel to mix drops into my tea.

Sophie had overheard them.

My daughter believed it was medicine for headaches.

I did not have headaches.

Federal investigators searched our kitchen.

They found residue of the prescribed sedative inside the tea container Daniel used for me.

The dose was low.

Not enough to cause immediate harm.

Enough to create drowsiness, memory gaps, and confusion.

For six months, I had complained of fatigue.

Daniel told me I was overworking.

Vanessa’s report described my forgetfulness.

They may have caused the very symptoms they intended to document.

The betrayal became physical.

Daniel had not only lied beside me.

He may have drugged me.

He denied adding anything to the tea.

Vanessa denied it too.

Then Sophie remembered Richard inside our kitchen.

He prepared my tea during Thanksgiving.

The security camera near the back entrance captured him entering alone.

He stayed eleven minutes.

Richard was arrested for tampering with food and conspiracy.

He claimed Vanessa gave him vitamin drops.

He claimed he wanted to help me relax.

Every person involved described the crime as something smaller.

A vitamin.

A contingency.

A ceremony.

A temporary guardianship.

Language had been their clean cloth over dirty hands.

Daniel was suspended from medical practice.

His hospital privileges were revoked pending investigation.

He blamed me publicly.

His attorney released a statement claiming a marital conflict had been exaggerated into a professional scandal.

I released nothing.

The evidence did not need my performance.

Lauren gave investigators the family chat.

The trust board received Vanessa’s fraudulent psychiatric report.

The board voted unanimously to keep me as trustee.

Then I used my authority.

I suspended all merger discussions with Hale Medical.

I ordered an independent audit.

I removed Richard from every advisory role.

Daniel heard about it from the news.

He called forty-three times.

I did not answer.

The audit found twenty-eight million dollars missing from charity surgery accounts.

Many transfers carried Daniel’s approval code.
