Chapter 2 - THE FORGED PERMISSION
Airport police escorted us away from Gate 42.
The children remained beside me.
Daniel’s family was taken to a separate interview room.
Vanessa complained that the flight was leaving.
The officer looked at her.
“That is no longer your primary problem.”
The travel authorization contained my driver’s license number, passport information, and signature.
It also contained a notarized stamp from Richard Bennett.
Daniel’s father.
Richard was not a licensed notary.
He had once been one.
His commission expired three years earlier.
Still, he had stamped the form.
An officer asked Daniel where he obtained my signature.
He looked at me.
“You signed school travel forms last year.”
“That was for Sophie’s field trip to Springfield.”
Daniel said nothing.
Someone had copied my signature from a school document.
The children sat near the wall with a female officer.
Sophie looked frightened.
Max kept asking whether we were in trouble.
I wanted to hold them.
I also wanted answers.
Vanessa’s suitcase was searched after the officer noticed two envelopes bearing my name.
Inside were copies of my tax returns.
A statement from my investment account.
A medical authorization form.
And a petition requesting temporary guardianship of Sophie and Max.
The petition had not yet been filed.
It accused me of anxiety, emotional instability, and unpredictable behavior.
Daniel’s signature appeared beneath the statement.
I read the first paragraph twice.
My wife has demonstrated increasing paranoia and difficulty managing stress.
I looked at him.
“You planned to have me declared unstable.”
“No.”
He moved closer.
“That was only protection.”
“For whom?”
“The children.”
“From me?”
“Rachel, listen.”
“You have been overwhelmed since your mother died.”
“My mother died five years ago.”
“You still talk about her.”
I stared at him.
“That is your evidence?”
He lowered his voice.
“Vanessa said the court needed documentation in case you reacted badly to the separation.”
Vanessa stood behind her attorney.
She had already called one.
I had not.
That told me how prepared she was.
The officer asked about the envelopes.
Vanessa claimed Daniel gave them to her.
Daniel claimed Richard handled the paperwork.
Richard claimed Lauren organized the trip.
Lauren began crying.
Each person pushed responsibility toward someone else.
Sophie was listening.
I saw her expression change every time an adult contradicted another adult.
I walked to her.
“Did Dad tell you to keep the trip secret?”
She nodded slowly.
“He said it was a surprise.”
“For me?”
“No.”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“He said you would be angry if you knew Vanessa was coming.”
Daniel looked away.
That was the first full truth.
He knew I would object.
He did not merely forget to tell me.
He built a system of lies around the children.
Max leaned against my side.
“Dad said Vanessa might be our new mom.”
The room became still.
I looked at Daniel.
His lips parted.
Nothing came out.
Vanessa whispered his name.
He ignored her.
The airport officer closed the passport folder.
“The children will not be leaving the country today.”
Vanessa turned sharply.
“We paid for this trip.”
The officer looked at me.
“Mrs. Bennett, do you want the children released into your care?”
“Yes.”
Daniel stepped forward.
“I am their father.”
“And I am their mother.”
The officer examined the forged permission form.
“Until this is reviewed, they leave with the parent who did not present fraudulent documents.”
Daniel’s face hardened.
For twelve years, I had rarely seen him angry with me.
Now I understood why.
I had rarely stood between him and something he wanted.
As I led Sophie and Max away, my phone vibrated.
A message had arrived from the hospital where Daniel worked.
Dr. Bennett, your emergency surgery coverage request has been denied.
You are expected in the operating room at 6:00 a.m.

Daniel had not only lied to me.
He had abandoned a real scheduled surgery to board that plane.
