Chapter 12 - SOPHIE’S SIGNATURE
Sophie was ten years old.
The statement carried her name in careful handwriting.
It said she felt unsafe around me.
It said I shouted without reason.
It said Vanessa made her feel protected.
Sophie told the advocate that Daniel dictated every sentence.
She cried because she did not want to write it.
He promised the vacation would be canceled if she refused.
Max sat in the waiting room while it happened.
Richard brought candy.
The lawyer never asked whether Sophie understood the document.
He notarized it anyway.
The lawyer was Richard’s cousin.
The custody court referred him for disciplinary action.
Daniel claimed the statement was only a family exercise.
The judge stared at him.
“You turned your daughter’s handwriting into evidence against her mother.”
Daniel’s face changed.
For the first time, he seemed to understand that professional language would not save him.
The judge suspended all visits temporarily.
Daniel began crying.
“Please.”
The judge did not move.
“You used your children inside an adult conspiracy.”
“Contact will resume when specialists determine it is safe.”
Sophie watched from a separate room.
She did not celebrate.
She curled against me afterward and said she still loved him.
“I know.”
“Does that make me bad?”
“No.”
“Love is not a verdict.”
She pressed her face against my coat.
“Will Dad go to prison?”
“I do not know.”
“Did he want you dead?”
The question almost broke me.
“I do not know exactly what he wanted.”
“But I know he allowed dangerous people to plan around my life.”
Sophie nodded as though trying to place the sentence somewhere inside herself.
Max asked whether we would ever go to Mexico.
I told him yes.
Someday.
When traveling felt like joy again.
The criminal investigation uncovered the lawyer’s files.
Dozens of statements had been prepared for children in custody and guardianship cases.
Many benefited Hale Medical.
Families who challenged hospital bills were described as unstable.
Children were placed with relatives connected to the network.
Property was sold to cover medical debt.
Richard’s operation reached far beyond our marriage.
I became a public witness.
Reporters waited outside the courthouse.
Some praised me.
Others accused me of destroying a respected surgeon.
Daniel’s patients defended him online.
They described his kindness.
His skill.
The lives he saved.
All of that could be true.
A surgeon could save strangers and betray his wife.
A father could love his children and use them.
A person did not become innocent because some parts of him were admirable.
Then Vanessa’s attorney contacted Naomi.
