Chapter 6 - THE FORM PREPARED FOR MY DEATH

Naomi examined the form in silence.
It was not an official death certificate.
It was an application for a presumption-of-death hearing.
Such petitions were used when a person disappeared and no body was found.
The attached document described a planned sailing excursion in Mexico.
It claimed I had a history of emotional instability and impulsive behavior near water.
I had never planned to join the trip.
Yet someone had prepared a legal story in which I disappeared during it.
My skin turned cold.
“Were they going to bring me later?”
Naomi studied the itinerary.
“Possibly.”
“Or they planned to claim you followed them.”
A message in the family chat mentioned leaving one villa room unused.
Daniel wrote.
We may need it if R changes her mind.
R.
Not Rachel.
A letter.
A problem.
A variable inside the plan.
The presumption form had not been signed.
But Richard had gathered the supporting documents.
Vanessa’s psychiatric letter.
My passport copy.
Photographs of me near our lake house.
A statement from Daniel describing my supposed depression.
I looked at Naomi.
“Did he plan to kill me?”
“We cannot assume that.”
“But we cannot ignore it.”
Airport police referred the documents to federal investigators because the alleged plan crossed international borders.
A detective named Marcus Bell interviewed me.
He asked about Daniel’s behavior during the previous year.
Had he increased my life insurance?
Yes.
Had he requested access to my trust?
Yes.
Had he encouraged international travel?
Yes.
Two months earlier, he suggested a sailing vacation in Mexico.
I declined because of work.
The detective wrote everything down.
Then he asked whether Daniel knew how to operate a boat.
“He grew up sailing.”
“Does Richard?”
“He owns one.”
The investigation expanded.
Daniel’s passport was temporarily seized.
Richard’s travel privileges were restricted.
Vanessa’s apartment was searched.
Police found wedding plans.
Financial records.
Medication bearing my name.
The prescription was for a sedative.
I had never been prescribed it.
A search of our home found the same medication hidden inside a travel toiletry bag.
Daniel claimed he knew nothing about it.
Vanessa claimed it was for a patient.
The label carried my date of birth.
The affair was no longer the largest lie.
It was only the surface.
Daniel appeared at the hotel that evening.
He had followed Lauren.
Security stopped him in the lobby.
I agreed to meet with Naomi present.
He entered wearing the blue jacket from the airport.
I could not stop looking at it.
“You think I was going to hurt you,” he said.
“I found paperwork prepared for my disappearance.”
“My father handled that.”
“You signed the supporting statement.”
“I did not read everything.”
“You are a surgeon.”
“You ask patients to read consent forms before you cut them open.”
His face tightened.
“This was different.”
“Yes.”
“It was my life.”
He sat across from me.
“Vanessa said we needed contingency documents.”
“For what contingency?”
“If you followed us.”
“And?”
“She said you might threaten yourself.”
“Did I ever threaten myself?”
“No.”
“Then why sign it?”
He looked toward the floor.
“Because I wanted the trip to happen.”

The truth was almost unbearably small.
He helped create a story that could destroy me because he wanted a vacation without resistance.
