Chapter 5 - THE SECOND WEDDING

Lauren met me inside a coffee shop near the hotel.

She wore sunglasses despite the snow outside.

Her hands shook around the paper cup.

I sat across from her.

“Tell me everything.”

She began with the hotel.

Daniel had reserved a private beachfront villa near Cancún.

A ceremony was scheduled for the third evening.

The invitation described it as a family blessing.

Not a legal wedding.

Daniel was still married to me.

But Vanessa planned to wear white.

Richard would give a speech.

The children would carry flowers.

Lauren had been asked to take photographs.

“What did they tell Sophie and Max?”

“That it was a promise ceremony.”

“Did they know Vanessa was replacing me?”

Lauren looked down.

“Sophie asked.”

“What did Daniel say?”

“He said you and he had stopped loving each other.”

My chest tightened.

Daniel slept beside me four nights earlier.

He kissed my forehead before leaving for the hospital.

He asked whether I wanted Thai food when he returned.

He performed marriage until the final hour.

“Why did you agree to go?” I asked.

Lauren began crying.

“My father said Daniel needed support.”

“Vanessa said you were unstable.”

“She showed me medical notes.”

“Did you believe them?”

“At first.”

“And later?”

“I saw you at Thanksgiving.”

“You seemed normal.”

“But I told myself doctors knew more.”

Vanessa’s false psychiatric report had done exactly what it was designed to do.

It made cruelty look like protection.

Lauren removed her phone.

She showed me photographs from a family planning group.

Vanessa had chosen dresses for Sophie and Max.

Daniel had approved a ring.

Richard discussed making the children feel included.

My name appeared only twice.

One message from Vanessa read.

Rachel may create trouble if she learns before departure.

Daniel answered.

She will believe I am working.

The second message came from Richard.

After Mexico, we move directly on the trust.

I looked at Lauren.

“What does after Mexico mean?”

“I do not know.”

“You were in the group.”

“They stopped discussing money when I asked questions.”

She forwarded the complete chat to me.

Then she told me something worse.

Daniel had rented an apartment for Vanessa.

The lease began eighteen months earlier.

He paid through a hospital consulting account.

The hospital had reimbursed part of the rent as professional housing.

My husband had used medical funds to support his affair.

Lauren looked at me.

“I am sorry.”

“Why tell me now?”

“Because Sophie called me this morning.”

“What did she say?”

“She asked whether you had ruined the family.”

I closed my eyes.

Daniel had already begun shaping the children’s understanding.

Lauren continued.

“I helped him lie.”

“I will tell the court.”

I looked at her.

“That may destroy your relationship with your brother.”

“It should change it.”

The difference mattered.

Before leaving, she gave me a small envelope.

She had found it inside Richard’s carry-on bag.

It contained copies of the children’s birth certificates.

My death certificate application.

May you like

The form was incomplete.

But my name was printed at the top.
