Chapter 8 - ADRIAN’S FATHER CAME TO THE HOUSE

Adrian’s father arrived two days after the arrest.

Richard Vale had ignored me throughout most of my marriage.

He considered my simple clothing proof that I came from an ordinary family.

Adrian allowed that assumption.

Richard liked believing his son had rescued me from obscurity.

Now he entered the Blackwood apartment carrying a settlement proposal.

He did not ask about Emma.

He asked whether my family intended to seize Meridian Crown.

“No.”

Richard relaxed.

“Then we can solve this privately.”

He offered me the townhouse.

Ten million dollars.

Full custody of Emma.

In return, I would withdraw support for criminal charges and deny knowledge of Adrian’s financial misconduct.

I looked at the final page.

“You are asking me to lie.”

“I am asking you to protect your daughter’s father.”

“From consequences?”

“From prison.”

Richard leaned forward.

“Children need fathers.”

“Children need safe adults.”

“Adrian never hurt Emma.”

“He planned to remove her from the country using forged documents.”

“He panicked.”

“He pledged her trust without permission.”

“He made a business decision.”

“Using a six-year-old’s future.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“You Blackwoods think money makes you moral.”

“No.”

I slid the proposal back.

“Money only made it possible for my family to see the paperwork sooner.”

Richard stood.

“If Adrian falls, Emma will carry his disgrace.”

“That is not how accountability works.”

“It is in families like ours.”

“There is no family like ours.”

I looked directly at him.

“There is yours.”

“There is mine.”

“And there is the one I am building for Emma.”

Richard left the offer on the table.

Marcus later discovered it contained a hidden provision.

If I accepted the payment, I would acknowledge that my marriage to Adrian had been financially motivated.

The statement could be used to challenge Emma’s Blackwood trust.

Even his settlement was another trap.

Adrian had learned details from his father.

He simply applied them more recklessly.

Richard attempted to contact the Meridian Crown board.

He owned a small number of legacy shares.

The board refused to restore Adrian.

Then Richard released a public statement.

He accused the Blackwood family of destroying his son for political reasons.

Thomas responded with a single paragraph.

He confirmed his recusal.

He requested an independent ethics review of every public interaction between his office and Meridian Crown.

The review found no improper assistance.

Adrian’s success had not come from political favors.

It came from private investments and lawful guarantees my family had provided because I requested discretion.

Richard’s accusation exposed the truth he meant to hide.

The market learned how dependent Meridian Crown had been on Blackwood support.

Adrian’s self-made story collapsed completely.

He called me from detention.

“You should never have told them.”

“I did not.”

“Your father did.”

“My father is dead.”

The words silenced him.

I had never spoken about my father with Adrian because grief remained private.

The Blackwood empire had been built by both my parents.

My mother continued leading the family foundation after his death.

Adrian had known me for nine years.

He never asked enough questions to understand who built the foundations beneath him.

“You never knew me,” I said.

“I loved you.”

“You loved the version of me that required nothing from you.”

“That is not fair.”

“No.”

“What happened to Emma was not fair.”

Adrian’s voice softened.

“Let me speak to her.”

“No.”

“I am her father.”

“You are also the man who packed her passport.”

He had no answer.

The court issued a temporary protective order.

Adrian could communicate with Emma only through a child specialist.

When I told her, she asked one question.

“Is Daddy angry about the necklace?”

“No.”

“He did not wear it.”

“I know.”

Emma touched the paper hearts stored inside a small box.

“Can I give it to someone else?”

“It belongs to you.”

She gave it to Marcus.

May you like

My brother wore it over his suit during the next shareholder meeting.

No one laughed.
