Chapter 6 - THE FILE HE CALLED INSURANCE

Adrian was released after questioning because investigators had not yet filed charges.
He returned to our Manhattan townhouse before I did.
When Marcus and I arrived with security, the private office had been emptied.
Computers were missing.
Documents had been burned inside the fireplace.
Adrian stood near the window holding a black drive.
“You cannot enter without my permission,” he said.
“My name is on the deed.”
“The house belongs to us both.”
“No.”
Marcus held up the property record.
“It belongs to a Blackwood residential trust.”
Adrian stared at the paper.
The townhouse had been purchased during our marriage.
He believed Meridian Crown paid for it.
In reality, my family provided the acquisition loan through a hidden entity.
Adrian had never made the final payments.
He had been living inside another borrowed symbol.
“You people built traps into everything.”
Marcus remained calm.
“We built protections around Elena.”
“You signed every agreement.”
Adrian lifted the black drive.
“This contains every private conversation Elena had with her family for seven years.”
I felt the room shift.
Adrian had monitored my phone, laptop, and home office.
The drive included emails from Thomas, banking information from Andrew, and private family discussions.
“If you release stolen communications, you add more crimes,” Marcus said.
Adrian smiled.
“You think reputation cares how information was obtained?”
He had already contacted a journalist.
Unless the Blackwood funds restored his financing, he would release the files.
He believed my oldest brother’s political opponents would use any private sentence against him.
He believed Andrew’s competitors would attack the bank.
He believed Marcus’s clients would fear exposure.
Most of all, he believed I would protect my family by surrendering.
The old Elena might have.
The woman who entered the hotel with Emma’s handmade necklace was already disappearing.
I looked at Marcus.
“Do not negotiate.”
Adrian’s smile vanished.
“Elena.”
“Release everything.”
“You do not know what is there.”
“If my family made mistakes, they will answer for them.”
“You would destroy your brothers?”
“No.”
“I refuse to let you use love as leverage.”
Adrian stepped toward me.
“You owe everything to those men.”
“I love them.”
“That is why I will not help you turn them into weapons.”
Marcus’s expression softened.
Adrian understood then that the black drive had no power unless we helped him create it.
He threw it into the fireplace.
Marcus’s security officer crossed the room and recovered it before the flames damaged the casing.
Adrian lunged toward him.
The officer restrained him.
I found another device beneath the desk.
A live transmission light was blinking.
Adrian had streamed the confrontation to Brooke’s account.
He expected us to panic on camera.
Instead, he recorded himself committing blackmail.
Police returned.
This time, Adrian was arrested.
Emma was not in the house.
My mother had taken her to the Blackwood family apartment.
Before I left, I entered Emma’s bedroom.
Half her clothes were gone.
Her passport was missing.
A travel bag had been packed beneath the bed.
Adrian had been preparing to take her.
Marcus examined the security system.
A message had been deleted that morning.
It came from a private aviation company.
The flight plan listed Adrian and Emma as passengers.
The destination was Switzerland.

Adrian had not planned merely to control our daughter’s trust.
He had planned to remove her from me before I understood what was happening.
