Chapter 11 - THE TRIAL OF ADRIAN VALE
Adrian’s trial began eighteen months after the gala.
He faced charges involving securities fraud, identity theft, forged financial instruments, attempted custodial interference, and conspiracy.
The prosecution did not charge him for adultery.
Betrayal was not always illegal.
The crimes built around it were.
Brooke testified first.
She described creating false emails, medical records, and committee approvals.
Her attorney asked whether Adrian manipulated her.
“Yes.”
The prosecutor asked whether she understood the documents were false.
“Yes.”
“Did he force you to humiliate Elena in the hotel?”
“No.”
Brooke accepted responsibility.
Her honesty reduced her sentence later.
Cassandra testified about the guardianship plan.
Noah testified about the hidden debt.
Marcus explained the Blackwood investment structure.
Andrew described the loan covenants.
Thomas submitted a sworn statement detailing his complete recusal from public matters.
Then I testified.
Adrian watched from the defense table.
His attorney asked why I concealed my family identity.
“I did not conceal my legal name.”
“You used Vale socially.”
“I used my husband’s surname.”
“Did Adrian know your brothers were powerful?”
“He knew their names.”
“He chose not to learn anything that did not flatter his story.”
The attorney asked whether my family’s support had been a trap.
“No.”
“They offered lawful financing.”
“They never requested personal control.”
“Did you enjoy watching it disappear?”
“No.”
“Why call Marcus from the lobby?”
I looked toward the jury.
“Because I had just learned my husband presented another woman and child as his family during a merger financed partly through my daughter’s forged trust.”
“What exactly did you tell your brother?”
“Take away everything he thinks he owns.”
The attorney allowed a dramatic pause.
“That sounds like revenge.”
“It was a request to stop our family’s support.”
“Adrian lost his company.”
“Adrian lost his position because an audit revealed fraud.”
The attorney showed photographs of Emma crying in the hotel.
“You brought a child into a corporate conflict.”
“I brought a daughter to surprise her father.”
“Brooke told you his family was upstairs.”
“Emma was his family.”
The courtroom became silent.
Adrian chose to testify.
He admitted the affair.
He admitted the false public relationship.
He admitted signing documents without reading some of them.
He blamed Brooke for the forgeries.
He blamed Richard for the offshore strategy.
He claimed he believed I had approved the trust collateral.
Then the prosecutor played a recording Cassandra made.
Adrian’s voice filled the courtroom.
Elena will never read the entire agreement.
She trusts me more than she trusts paper.
The jury looked toward him.
He closed his eyes.
The prosecutor asked one question.
“Was her trust the weakness you exploited?”
Adrian answered quietly.
“Yes.”
He was convicted on every major fraud charge.
The attempted custodial interference charge produced the longest deliberation.
The packed suitcase, forged authorization, and flight plan proved intent.
He was convicted there too.
Adrian received twenty-two years.
Richard received seventeen after a separate trial.
Brooke received four years under her cooperation agreement.
Raymond Whitmore received twelve years for merger fraud.
At sentencing, Adrian looked at Emma’s empty seat.
I had not brought her.
He spoke to me.
“Tell her I am sorry.”
“No.”
His face changed.
“I will give her the statement when her therapist believes she is ready.”
“You do not give me instructions about her anymore.”
