Chapter 1 - THE CALL THAT ENDED THE GALA

Marcus remained silent for one measured second.

Then he answered.

“I’ve already started.”

Brooke’s smile disappeared.

She could not hear my brother’s words, but she saw the change in my face.

Behind her, the grand lobby continued glittering beneath crystal chandeliers.

Executives laughed beside towers of champagne.

Photographers waited near the ballroom entrance.

A string quartet played beneath a wall of white roses spelling Adrian’s company name.

Tonight was supposed to be Adrian Vale’s triumph.

He would be announced as the new chief executive of Meridian Crown Technologies.

He would also reveal a merger valued at more than nine billion dollars.

Every business magazine in New York had sent a reporter.

Emma stood beside me holding her paper necklace.

The glitter around its edges had begun rubbing off onto her gloves.

“Mommy,” she whispered.

“Is Daddy upstairs?”

I looked down at her.

“Yes.”

“Can we still surprise him?”

My heart tightened.

Brooke stepped closer.

“You need to leave.”

Her voice had lost its playful cruelty.

It now carried urgency.

“You are not on the guest list.”

“This building is private tonight.”

I returned my phone to my purse.

“Then call security.”

Brooke stared at me.

She had expected tears.

She had expected me to ask questions.

She had expected the ordinary, invisible wife Adrian described to his colleagues.

She did not expect Elena Blackwood.

Before Brooke could respond, every phone in the lobby began vibrating.

Executives looked down at their screens.

Whispers moved through the crowd.

One man read his message twice.

Another hurried toward the ballroom.

A woman from the finance press raised her phone and began recording.

Brooke checked her own device.

Her face turned pale.

Meridian Crown’s primary credit facility had been suspended.

Three investment funds had withdrawn their support from the merger.

A banking consortium had frozen the bridge loan scheduled to close at midnight.

Two board members had requested an emergency review of Adrian’s authority.

Brooke looked at me.

“What did you do?”

“I made one phone call.”

“You cannot freeze a public company because your feelings are hurt.”

“No.”

I glanced toward the ballroom.

“But lenders can suspend financing when an executive violates fraud covenants.”

Her lips parted.

“You are lying.”

The elevator doors opened behind her.

Marcus Blackwood stepped into the lobby wearing a dark overcoat.

He was followed by two attorneys, a forensic accountant, and the hotel’s director of security.

My youngest brother had the calm expression that made dishonest people speak too quickly.

He kissed my cheek.

Then he knelt in front of Emma.

“You must be the famous jewelry designer.”

Emma held up the necklace.

“It is for Daddy.”

Marcus looked at me.

He understood what that meant.

“Uncle Marcus,” Emma asked, “does Daddy have another wife?”

Brooke looked away.

Marcus stood slowly.

“Where is Adrian?”

Brooke recovered enough to straighten her shoulders.

“Mr. Vale is preparing for his announcement.”

“With whom?”

She remained silent.

Marcus removed a document from his coat.

“This is a preservation order covering every Meridian Crown device, server, and executive communication connected to tonight’s merger.”

“You have no authority here.”

“The Blackwood family funds hold thirty-eight percent of Meridian Crown’s voting rights.”

Brooke’s confidence cracked.

“They do not.”

“They do through seven investment entities Adrian never bothered to trace.”

The ballroom doors opened.

Adrian stepped into the lobby wearing a black tuxedo and a gold executive pin.

A beautiful woman stood beside him in a silver gown.

Her hand rested on the shoulder of a dark-haired boy who appeared to be eight.

Adrian saw me.

He stopped walking.

The woman beside him tightened her grip on the boy.

Emma’s face brightened.

“Daddy.”

She ran forward with the necklace held high.

Adrian did not open his arms.

He looked at the cameras.

Then at the executives.

Then at the woman beside him.

Emma stopped several feet away.

“This is for you.”

The woman in silver spoke first.

“Adrian, who is this child?”

Emma looked at her father.

Adrian’s mouth opened.

No words came out.

I walked toward them.

“You should answer her.”

The boy beside the woman stared at Emma.

Then he whispered something loud enough for the nearest reporters to hear.

“Daddy said his daughter was sick and never left home.”

May you like

Emma lowered the paper necklace.

In that moment, Adrian’s perfect evening began collapsing faster than any financial account Marcus could freeze.
