Chapter 3 - THE SECRETARY’S SECOND PHONE

Brooke reached the service elevator before hotel security caught her.

She threw her phone into a decorative fountain.

Marcus’s forensic accountant recovered it from the water.

A second device was found taped beneath her dress.

That phone connected directly to Meridian Crown’s private servers.

Brooke had been issuing remote deletion commands since my call to Marcus.

The preservation order made those commands a potential crime.

Adrian attempted to intervene.

“She acts under my authority.”

Marcus looked at him.

“Are you admitting you ordered destruction of company records?”

Adrian stopped.

Brooke stared at him.

For years, she had protected his schedules, secrets, hotel reservations, and private accounts.

Now he was deciding whether she remained useful.

“I did not order anything,” he said.

Brooke’s face changed.

The betrayal arrived instantly.

“You told me to clean everything.”

“I told you to secure the files.”

“You said Elena could never see the Chicago folder.”

The lobby became silent.

Adrian’s eyes narrowed.

“Stop talking.”

Brooke laughed once.

“You brought your real wife here and now you want me silent?”

“You brought her,” he snapped.

Brooke looked at me.

“I did not invite you.”

“No.”

I held Emma closer.

“But you made sure I was humiliated when I arrived.”

Brooke had known I was coming.

I had called Adrian’s office that afternoon and asked whether family could attend.

Brooke told me the gala welcomed spouses and children.

She gave me the entrance time.

Then she positioned herself in the lobby to make certain I learned about Cassandra publicly.

The humiliation had been planned.

“Why?” I asked.

Brooke’s eyes moved toward Adrian.

“He promised me Cassandra would be temporary.”

Cassandra stepped forward.

“What?”

Brooke smiled bitterly.

“He told me he needed your father’s company.”

“He told me you would disappear after the merger.”

Cassandra looked at Adrian.

“How many women did you promise the future to?”

Adrian turned toward the security team.

“This event is over.”

Marcus shook his head.

“The event has not begun.”

The emergency board meeting would be held inside the ballroom in twenty minutes.

Meridian Crown’s directors were already arriving.

Three lenders had requested attendance.

Raymond Whitmore refused to leave.

Cassandra took Oliver’s hand and moved away from Adrian.

The boy looked confused.

“Are we still having cake?”

Cassandra knelt beside him.

“Not tonight.”

Emma watched them.

Children recognized each other’s disappointment even when adults created different lies around it.

She picked up the paper necklace from the floor.

One heart had torn.

Oliver stepped toward her.

“I have tape upstairs.”

Cassandra looked at me.

For one unexpected second, we were not rivals.

We were two mothers standing beside children Adrian had used to support different stories.

Emma followed Oliver toward a lounge under hotel security supervision.

My mother, Evelyn Blackwood, had arrived and went with them.

She kissed Emma’s head without asking questions.

That was all I needed.

The adults entered the ballroom.

Marcus connected Brooke’s recovered phone to the main display.

The files she attempted to delete included more than affair messages.

They contained private contracts.

Insurance policies.

Property transfers.

Medical reports carrying my name.

One document declared me mentally incapacitated.

It bore the signature of a physician I had never met.

Another authorized Adrian to manage Emma’s trust until she turned twenty-five.

My signature appeared at the bottom.

It was perfect.

It was also false.

I looked at Adrian.

“What did you plan to do with my daughter’s trust?”

He did not answer.

Marcus opened the folder Brooke called Chicago.

May you like

Inside were records showing Adrian had used Emma’s future inheritance as collateral for the merger.

My six-year-old daughter had been financing the night intended to erase her.
