Chapter 18 - THE FALSE VICTORY

For forty-eight hours, everything appeared finished.

Charles remained in custody.

Thomas entered protective detention.

Federal agents searched the Whitmore estate.

Vanessa testified.

The stolen transfer was stopped.

James left intensive care.

Emily held her son against her chest for the first time without wires between them.

She cried quietly.

Raymond stood by the window pretending not to.

Nathan brought a tiny firefighter teddy bear.

For one afternoon, the world felt almost normal.

Then the hospital alarms sounded.

Not medical alarms.

Security alarms.

The maternity floor entered lockdown.

Raymond immediately moved toward the door.

A voice came through the intercom.

“Code Silver.”

Armed individual.

Emily clutched James.

Security rushed into the corridor.

The power flickered.

Backup lights turned red.

A nurse stepped inside.

“Mrs. Whitmore, we need to move you.”

Emily looked at her badge.

Emily backed away.

“Who are you?”

The woman reached inside her jacket.

Emily hit the emergency button.

Security officers stormed in.

The woman was restrained.

Signed P.

Preston.

Emily realized the terrifying truth.

He had not wanted to kill James.

He wanted to take him.

Because James was still an heir.

And if Preston controlled the child, he believed he still had leverage.

Detective Ortiz entered minutes later.

“We traced the message.”

“Where?”

Ortiz looked toward Raymond.

“The Saint Claire family cemetery.”

Emily’s face changed.

Her mother was buried there.

So was her father.

Preston had chosen the one place he knew Emily would come.

And this time, Emily understood exactly what he wanted.

Her.
