Chapter 11 - THE OTHER HEIR

Emily read the sentence again.
Not the only heir.
Raymond sat down heavily.
“That makes no sense.”
“My mother only had me.”
“That’s what I believed.”
The red box contained adoption documents.
Sealed records.
And photographs of an infant boy.
The name had been redacted.
Emily’s mother was listed as legal guardian.
Raymond looked stunned.
“I never knew.”
Detective Ortiz examined the dates.
“The child was born two years before Emily.”
Emily searched the documents.
“Who were his parents?”
The answer appeared in an old court petition.
The biological mother had died during childbirth.
The father was listed as unknown.
Margaret had quietly arranged guardianship.
But the adoption was never completed.
Then Emily found a photograph.
Margaret stood holding a toddler.
Beside her was Charles Whitmore.
Raymond swore.
Emily’s mind raced.
“Was the child Charles’s?”
Ortiz did not speculate.
But DNA could answer.
A handwritten address appeared on the back of the photograph.
Raymond recognized the town.
They located the boy within twenty-four hours.
Except he was no longer a boy.
His name was Nathan Cole.
He was thirty-five.
A firefighter.
Married.
Father of two.
He had grown up believing his foster parents were his biological family.
When Emily met him, he looked at Margaret’s photograph for a long time.
“I’ve seen her before.”
Emily’s breath caught.
“Where?”
“In dreams, almost.”
Nathan shook his head.
“I remember her singing.”
DNA testing produced the truth.
Nathan’s father was not Charles.
His father had been Emily’s father, Jonathan.
Emily sat alone for an hour after learning it.
Her father had a son before marrying Margaret.
Margaret had discovered Nathan after his mother died.
Instead of hiding him, she protected him.
And her trust named both children as heirs.
Nathan looked at Emily.
“I don’t want your money.”
Emily almost laughed through tears.
“That may be the first sane thing anyone has said all week.”
But the discovery created a new danger.

If Emily died, control would pass to Nathan.
And according to phone records, Thomas Reed had searched Nathan’s address three days earlier.
