Chapter 17 - THE COUNTERATTACK

Thomas Reed looked twenty years older.

Bruises covered his face.

His left arm sat in a sling.

Emily faced him across an interrogation room.

“You helped destroy my family.”

Thomas nodded.

“I know.”

“Did you kill my mother?”

“No.”

“Did Charles?”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“No.”

Emily’s anger sharpened.

“Then who?”

Thomas looked directly at her.

“Preston’s mother.”

Emily froze.

Eleanor Whitmore had remained almost completely absent since the hospital assault.

Always elegant.

Always distant.

Always dismissive of Emily.

Thomas explained.

Margaret had confronted Charles during the medical conference.

Charles intended to negotiate.

Eleanor believed exposure would destroy the Whitmore name.

She entered Margaret’s hotel room.

She tampered with medication Margaret took for a minor heart condition.

Thomas helped erase surveillance afterward.

Emily’s eyes filled.

“And my father?”

Thomas lowered his gaze.

“Charles.”

Jonathan discovered the truth two years later.

Charles arranged the car accident.

Raymond stood behind Emily.

His face had gone gray.

Thomas continued.

“Preston knew by the time he was twenty-four.”

“He learned everything.”

“And he decided his family had already sacrificed too much to lose the hospitals.”

Emily stood slowly.

She no longer felt shocked.

Only finished.

She walked outside.

Raymond followed.

“What are you going to do?”

Emily looked through the glass toward Thomas.

“Take everything they used to hurt people.”

Within twenty-four hours, federal investigators froze Whitmore corporate accounts.

Saint Claire attorneys filed civil actions.

Emily removed every remaining Whitmore executive.

Nathan publicly joined her as co-beneficiary.

Alicia delivered the financial evidence.

Vanessa accepted a plea agreement in exchange for testimony.

Then Emily held a press conference.

She did not cry.

She did not attack.

She simply released the truth.

Every stolen dollar.

Every forged signature.

Every hidden patient.

Every crime.

Whitmore Medical Holdings lost half its value before the press conference ended.

Charles was arrested that evening.

Eleanor disappeared before police reached the estate.

And Preston finally broke his silence.

He called Emily directly.

“You’re destroying my mother.”

Emily looked toward James sleeping beside her.

“No.”

“Your mother did that herself.”

Preston breathed heavily.

“You think you’ve won?”

Emily answered calmly.

May you like

“I haven’t started.”

Then she hung up.
