Chapter 16 - MARGARET’S FINAL CLUE

Emily named her son James.

After her father.

For three days, James remained in the NICU.

He grew stronger.

So did Emily.

Preston stayed hidden.

But his message gave investigators one important clue.

He called James “my son.”

Not “our son.”

Ownership.

That was always how Preston thought.

People were assets.

Love was leverage.

Emily sat beside James’s incubator when she remembered something from room 417.

Her mother’s recording.

“There’s more than money involved.”

She asked Raymond to bring the old cassette.

They listened again.

This time Nathan was present.

At the end of the message, beneath the static, Nathan heard something.

“Wait.”

He replayed it.

A faint bell rang in the background.

Three notes.

Raymond recognized it.

“The old Saint Claire chapel.”

Margaret had recorded the message there.

The chapel still existed.

Beneath it was a sealed storage crypt containing archived hospital documents.

Raymond had forgotten about it.

Police searched the space.

Behind an old dedication plaque, they found a waterproof envelope.

Margaret had hidden one final set of records.

Not financial records.

Medical records.

Charles Whitmore had been running illegal drug trials through shell clinics.

Patients were enrolled without proper consent.

Several died.

Margaret discovered it.

Thomas Reed falsified files.

And Preston’s name appeared on a later document proving he knew about the cover-up before he met Emily.

Emily stared at his signature.

“So he knew everything.”

Raymond nodded.

“He didn’t marry you because his father told him to.”

“He volunteered.”

That truth hurt differently.

Preston had chosen her as a target.

Every kiss.

Every promise.

Every future they planned.

Calculated.

Then Detective Ortiz entered the NICU waiting room.

“We found Thomas Reed.”

Emily looked up.

“Alive?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“He walked into a police station.”

Thomas had escaped Preston.

And he was ready to testify.

May you like

But only under one condition.

He wanted Emily present when he told the truth about Margaret’s death.
