Chapter 8 - The Husband Who Stayed Silent

Dominic asked to speak to me privately.

I refused.

We spoke with Mara present.

He looked like he had not slept.

“I never wanted them to hurt you.”

I stared at him.

“You were standing six feet away.”

“I mean the ring.”

“So tearing my dress was acceptable?”

“No.”

“You did nothing.”

“I froze.”

I nodded.

That answer was at least honest.

Dominic continued.

“I was angry.”

“At me?”

“Yes.”

“Because I was wealthy.”

“Because you let me believe I was carrying us.”

I thought about three years of dinners where Eleanor praised Dominic for “supporting” me.

I usually smiled.

Not because I enjoyed lying.

Because correcting them would have required discussing private money I had no obligation to reveal.

“I worked.”

I said.

“I made six figures.”

“I paid our property taxes.”

“I covered Noah’s—”

I stopped.

There was no Noah.

Different story.

I touched my stomach.

The baby shifted.

I continued.

“I paid my share.”

Dominic looked ashamed.

“I know that now.”

“No.”

“You knew then.”

“You just liked the story where I needed you.”

He closed his eyes.

I saw the truth hit.

Not inheritance.

Not money.

Need.

Dominic liked being the generous husband because it gave him moral authority.

When I disagreed, he reminded me what he paid for.

When his family insulted me, he said I should ignore it because they were “old-fashioned.”

When I suggested boundaries, he accused me of creating conflict.

I had called that peace.

It was hierarchy.

Mara placed the divorce papers in front of me.

Not his.

Mine.

She had prepared them overnight.

I signed.

Dominic stared.

“You already had these?”

“I asked Mara to prepare contingency papers six months ago.”

“Why?”

“Because six months ago, Chloe called me dead weight at Christmas and you laughed.”

His face changed.

“I didn’t laugh.”

“You smiled.”

“That was worse.”

He looked down.

I signed the final page.

Then slid the papers toward Mara.

Dominic whispered.

“Is there really no chance?”

I thought about it.

Then answered.

“There was a chance every time you could have defended me and chose comfort instead.”

He cried.

Quietly.

I did not enjoy it.

That surprised me.

I had imagined leaving would feel like revenge.

It felt like grief finally given paperwork.

Then Mara received a call.

Jonathan Bell had been located.

Not in Nassau.

Not Florida.

Back in New York.

He had used Chloe’s charter as a distraction.

His actual target was Whitmore headquarters.

May you like

Security had detained him inside the private archives.

And he was carrying an original copy of my grandfather’s will.
