Chapter 14 - The Insider’s Deal

Jonathan Bell pleaded guilty.

Not immediately.

First he tried to bargain.

Then prosecutors showed him Peter Vale’s records.

Peter had been arrested at a house in Greenwich.

Inside were account ledgers going back fifteen years.

Jonathan’s payments.

Eleanor’s payments.

Stephen’s loan.

Vendor kickbacks.

And one account labeled C.W.

Dad assumed it meant Charles Whitmore.

It did not.

It meant Claire Whitmore.

My mother.

She died eleven years ago.

The account showed payments made in her name after death.

My stomach tightened.

Jonathan had used my mother’s dormant trust profile to move money.

Dad went silent when he saw it.

That was the first time I saw him look genuinely wounded by the fraud.

Not angry.

Wounded.

“My wife.”

he whispered.

Someone had turned her name into a transaction vehicle.

Mara continued.

Jonathan used deceased or inactive beneficiaries because oversight was lighter.

Small transfers hid among estate expenses.

The theft totaled another nine million.

Dad walked out.

I followed.

He stood near the window.

“I told her I would protect everything for you.”

“Dad.”

“I let him use her name.”

“You didn’t let him.”

“I trusted him.”

I touched his arm.

“Trust is not consent.”

He looked at me.

I had needed to learn the same thing about Dominic.

Maybe Dad needed it too.

Inside, Jonathan accepted a cooperation agreement.

He admitted designing the ring frame.

Eleanor requested humiliation.

Jonathan saw opportunity.

If I faced a theft charge, he would activate the forged trust amendment.

He also admitted leaking my descendant trust to Stephen intentionally, knowing Stephen would tell Dominic.

“Why?”

Mara asked.

Jonathan answered.

“Because resentment spreads faster when people think they discovered something themselves.”

That sentence chilled me.

He understood people.

He knew exactly which insecurity belonged to whom.

Stephen’s jealousy.

Dominic’s pride.

Eleanor’s class obsession.

Chloe’s contempt.

Amanda’s need for approval.

He did not create those weaknesses.

He connected them.

Then Jonathan named his partner inside hotel operations.

Arthur Bell.

My childhood acquaintance.

The ballroom manager.

The man who had seemed to protect me.

I stopped breathing.

Mara shook her head.

“Arthur preserved the cameras.”

Jonathan smiled.

May you like

“Yes.”

“Because he changed sides.”
