Chapter 12 - The Share Transfer

The transfer was scheduled to close at noon.
Dad’s attorneys filed an emergency injunction at 9:12.
Eleanor’s lawyers opposed it at 9:34.
So she had not disappeared completely.
She was communicating through counsel.
At 10:05, the court froze the transaction temporarily.
At 10:19, Eleanor filed a claim stating the money used for the purchase belonged to Cole family investment accounts.
Forensic records suggested otherwise.
Dad’s stolen vendor payments flowed directly into those accounts.
At 11:00, Stephen testified remotely.
He admitted taking a private loan from Peter Vale because he did not want Dad knowing about a failed restaurant investment.
Dad stared at his brother.
“You borrowed against Whitmore shares to hide a restaurant loss?”
Stephen looked miserable.
“Yes.”
“How much did you lose?”
“Four million.”
Dad closed his eyes.
“Unbelievable.”
Stephen snapped.
“You always make everything sound easy.”
“No.”
Dad answered.
“I make disclosure sound easier than fraud.”
The judge froze Stephen’s shares pending investigation.
Eleanor’s move failed.
Then her attorney made an offer.
Eleanor would surrender.
In exchange, she wanted immunity for Chloe and Dominic.
Dominic looked stunned.
Chloe cried.
Mara asked.
“Immunity from what?”
The answer arrived thirty minutes later.
Eleanor claimed both children had unknowingly benefited from fraudulent money.
She feared prosecutors could treat luxury expenditures as laundering.
Mara almost laughed.
“That’s nonsense unless they knowingly participated.”
Dominic whispered.
“She thinks she’s protecting us.”
I looked at him.
“Or buying loyalty.”
He did not argue.
Eleanor surrendered that evening.
She entered through the back entrance of a federal courthouse.
No dramatic chase.
No disguise.
Just a woman who had spent years manipulating people finally walking into a building she could not control.
During questioning, she admitted arranging my meeting with Dominic.
She admitted vendor fraud.
She admitted paying Jonathan.
She admitted directing Amanda to take the ring.
But she insisted she never intended to keep the ring or have me imprisoned.
“Only embarrassed.”
Mara repeated.
“Only?”
Eleanor looked irritated.
“She needed to understand consequences.”
I almost laughed when I heard that.
The woman who had avoided consequences for twelve years wanted to teach me about them.
Then investigators asked who designed Project Daughter.
Eleanor frowned.
“What?”
The label appeared in Jonathan’s files.
PROJECT DAUGHTER.
We had assumed it referred to me.
It did not.

The document concerned Chloe.
And a trust account worth sixteen million dollars that Chloe did not know existed.
