Chapter 5 - Uncle Stephen

Stephen Whitmore arrived at the hotel before midnight.

Not voluntarily.

Dad summoned him to an emergency family meeting.

My uncle walked into the suite smiling like someone expected to talk his way through everything.

Then he saw Dominic.

His smile disappeared.

Dad placed the leaked trust summary on the table.

“Explain.”

Stephen glanced at me.

“Vivienne was eventually going to tell him.”

“That was not your decision.”

“She married him.”

“She was hiding material assets.”

Dad’s eyes hardened.

“My daughter’s private trust is not material to you.”

Stephen leaned back.

“Everything in Whitmore Holdings is material to me.”

There it was.

Stephen had spent most of his life believing Dad had received too much.

Grandfather made Dad chief executive.

Dad expanded the company.

Stephen retained wealth but little authority.

He never forgave him.

“What did you expect Dominic to do?”

I asked.

Stephen answered.

“Protect himself.”

“From his wealthy wife?”

“From being controlled by your father.”

Dad almost laughed.

Stephen continued.

“The child trust changes future voting dynamics.”

Now we were getting closer.

My unborn child’s shares might someday strengthen Dad’s branch of the family.

Stephen’s children held smaller interests.

A divorce involving Dominic could create uncertainty.

Litigation could delay transfers.

Maybe reduce Dad’s control.

I stared at my uncle.

“You used my marriage to create a corporate dispute.”

Stephen shook his head.

“I gave your husband information.”

“That’s all.”

Dad asked.

“Did you tell Eleanor about the trust?”

Silence.

Stephen looked toward Dominic.

Dominic looked genuinely shocked.

“Stephen?”

Dad repeated.

“Did you tell her?”

“Yes.”

The word landed heavily.

I closed my eyes.

“Why?”

“She asked whether a scandal involving you would affect the trust.”

“And you answered.”

“Yes.”

“Did you tell her to plant the ring?”

“No.”

He sounded convincing.

Maybe he was.

Mara entered with new information.

Amanda’s phone had been imaged with her consent.

There were messages from Eleanor.

Take ring after first dance.

Wait for blue dress near champagne.

Put it in side pocket.

Then another number.

Unknown.

Make sure security cameras near bridal lounge are disabled before 7:30.

The cameras had not been disabled.

Someone tried.

Hotel cybersecurity blocked the request.

Mara looked at me.

“The attempt came from a Whitmore administrative login.”

Dad’s expression became dangerous.

“Whose?”

“Jonathan Bell.”

Our trust director.

The man responsible for protecting the inheritance.

My father looked genuinely stunned.

Jonathan had worked for our family for twenty years.

Stephen whispered.

“Well.”

“Apparently I’m not the only problem.”

Dad turned toward him.

“Do not enjoy this.”

Then Mara’s phone buzzed.

She read the message.

“Jonathan’s missing.”

His office was empty.

Phone off.

Car gone.

And thirty minutes earlier, someone using his credentials had attempted to transfer twelve million dollars from a dormant Whitmore trust account.
