Chapter 10 - Eleanor’s Real Money

The Cole family was not as wealthy as they appeared.

That was the next shock.

The penthouse.

The vacation house.

Chloe’s extravagant wedding.

The private-school tuition.

Club memberships.

Most were financed through debt.

And fraud.

Eleanor had spent twelve years inflating invoices submitted by Cole Event Services to Whitmore hotels.

My father did not recognize the company because contracts sat beneath regional hospitality vendors.

Eleanor used intermediaries.

Jonathan approved exceptions.

Small amounts initially.

Fifty thousand.

Seventy thousand.

Then larger.

Over twelve years.

Twenty-six million dollars.

Dad stared at the forensic report.

“She was stealing from us before Vivienne married Dominic.”

Mara nodded.

That changed everything.

My marriage had not started the connection.

The theft did.

Eleanor already knew who I was.

I stopped breathing.

“What?”

Mara turned the screen.

An email from Eleanor to Jonathan.

Dated three months before Dominic and I met.

CHARLES WHITMORE’S DAUGHTER WILL BE AT THE HART FOUNDATION DINNER.

DOMINIC SHOULD ATTEND.

My skin went cold.

Dominic stared.

“Mom introduced us.”

I remembered.

The charity gala.

Dominic had “accidentally” sat at my table after a seating mix-up.

He was charming.

Funny.

He asked for my number.

I thought the meeting was chance.

Eleanor had arranged it.

Dominic looked horrified.

“I didn’t know.”

I believed him.

Again.

That did not repair anything.

Mara read more.

Eleanor hoped a marriage would provide easier access to Whitmore vendor networks.

Jonathan encouraged it.

Dominic became useful without realizing why.

Then I hid my family wealth.

That complicated Eleanor’s plan.

She initially assumed I was estranged from Dad.

When she discovered we were still close, she became more cautious.

Her insults served a purpose too.

She wanted to know whether I would reveal the family connection under pressure.

I never did.

So she concluded I was ashamed.

Or disconnected.

Either way, safe to mistreat.

Until my pregnancy.

The descendant trust made me dangerous.

A child tied my branch more permanently into Whitmore control.

Jonathan saw opportunity.

Eleanor saw risk.

Then the divorce.

If Dominic left me quietly, access disappeared.

If I left under scandal, maybe they gained leverage first.

Dad looked at me.

“I am sorry.”

I frowned.

“For what?”

“I spent years believing your privacy was protecting you.”

“So did I.”

He shook his head.

“It protected their assumptions.”

I thought about that.

Then Mara opened one final account.

Eleanor’s offshore reserve.

Balance.

Eleven million dollars.

Recent withdrawal.

Ten million.

Destination.

Unknown.

Timestamp.

Two hours after I called Dad.

May you like

Eleanor had moved almost everything.

And now nobody knew where she was.
