Chapter 18 - Elena’s Mission

Elena disappeared before federal agents reached her hotel.

Her room contained photographs of the Vale family, Michael Bennett, and every Dominion Circle member.

One wall was devoted to Adrian.

Another was devoted to Nora.

A final photograph showed Elena standing beside Michael Bennett twenty years earlier.

Grace recognized her.

“Elena Marquez.”

“She was Dad’s partner.”

Michael told his daughters Elena died during an undercover operation.

Instead, she entered deep cover inside the Dominion Circle.

She used military credentials to track illegal defense technology transfers.

Her presence at the wedding had not been accidental.

Nora called the number Elena had used.

She answered.

“Did you poison Vivian?”

“I administered an antidote before she drank.”

“The second glass contained a controlled paralytic.”

“You almost killed her.”

“I created a medical event the conspirators could not control.”

“You used her.”

“Yes.”

The honesty was unsettling.

“Why?”

“Vivian had already agreed to testify.”

“Julian’s men planned to kill her after the accusation.”

“The only secure place was a federal medical unit.”

Adrian took the phone.

“Why use a dead agent’s identity?”

“Because the Dominion Circle owns people inside every legitimate agency.”

“Who do you work for?”

“No one anymore.”

Elena had spent seventeen years collecting evidence.

Michael’s death convinced her that official investigations would always be compromised.

She created her own network of retired agents, investigators, and victims.

Locking the ballroom, projecting the footage, and controlling the security response had all been her operation.

“You knew about the poisoning,” Adrian said.

“I knew Julian planned a false medical emergency.”

“I did not know Charles had ordered Pierce to replace the sedative with a lethal compound.”

“Why didn’t you warn me?”

“Because you would have canceled the wedding.”

“We needed Charles, Julian, Pierce, Celeste, and the board in one place.”

Nora felt sick.

“You risked hundreds of lives to create one perfect crime scene.”

“Yes.”

Elena’s voice softened.

“Michael would have hated my decision.”

“But he would have understood why I made it.”

Nora rejected that.

“My father believed evidence mattered because people mattered.”

“You treated people as evidence.”

Elena remained silent.

Then she revealed her final piece of information.

The Dominion Circle maintained a central ledger.

It contained every payment, proxy takeover, staged death, and political arrangement.

Eleanor had hidden it inside the Vale Global headquarters.

“Where?”

“In the new chief executive’s office.”

Nora looked toward the wall behind her desk.

A clicking sound began inside it.

Elena shouted through the phone.

May you like

“Get out.”

The explosion threw Nora across the room.
