Chapter 16 - The Founder Above the Tycoon

Michael Bennett’s watch contained a second microfilm disk.
The new files dated back thirty-two years.
They described an organization called the Dominion Circle.
The Circle consisted of investors, judges, intelligence contractors, and political donors.
They funded Vale Global before Richard became chief executive.
Charles Wynn served as their financial representative.
Richard supplied technology.
Helena supplied engineering research.
When either of them resisted, the Circle used blackmail, accidents, and medical proxy fraud to maintain control.
The final report named the Circle’s chairperson.
Eleanor Vale.
Adrian’s grandmother.
Eleanor was ninety-one years old.
She lived in a private medical residence overlooking the ocean.
The public believed she had advanced dementia.
According to Michael’s files, her condition was exaggerated.
She remained mentally competent.
She had directed major family decisions through Charles.
Adrian traveled to the residence with Nora, Grace, Elena, and federal agents.
Eleanor sat beside a window in a white silk robe.
Her eyes were clear.
“You look like Richard,” she told Adrian.
“I hope not.”
“You say that because you still believe morality survives power.”
Nora placed the reports before her.
“Did you order my father’s death?”
Eleanor examined her.
“Michael Bennett was offered a position.”
“He refused.”
“That is not an answer.”
“It is the only answer you require.”
Adrian felt anger rise.
“Did you tell Charles to kill him?”
“I told Charles to protect the system.”
“Men like Charles always interpret protection as violence.”
“You knew what he would do.”
“I knew what he was capable of.”
Eleanor admitted creating the emergency proxy structure.
It allowed the Circle to replace executives without public scandal.
Richard later tried to dismantle it.
That decision marked him for removal.
Julian’s poisoning plot had unknowingly copied the Circle’s oldest method.
Nora activated a recorder.
Eleanor smiled.
“You believe confession creates justice.”
“It only creates another document powerful people may bury.”
Elena entered with a federal warrant.
“This one will not be buried.”
Eleanor did not resist.
As agents approached, she looked toward Adrian.
“The Dominion Circle has already selected your replacement.”
“I resigned this morning.”
For the first time, Eleanor looked surprised.
“You cannot resign from blood.”
“No.”
“But I can resign from your empire.”
Outside the residence, Adrian received an emergency message.
Vale Global’s board had removed him.

The new chief executive had been elected unanimously.
