Chapter 14 - The Roof of Broken Vows

Rain swept across the chapel roof.

Julian stood near the bell tower.

The encrypted drive hung from a chain around his neck.

Below him, hundreds of police lights surrounded the estate.

Adrian approached with empty hands.

Nora, Elena, Marcus, and Helena remained near the stairwell entrance.

“You cannot escape,” Adrian said.

“I stopped trying to escape years ago.”

Julian looked toward Helena.

“You came back for the company.”

“I came back for you.”

“You waited until I became useful.”

Helena’s voice broke.

“I watched you from a distance.”

“I paid for your education.”

“I tried to keep Charles away from you.”

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“Yes.”

“And that was wrong.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“One honest sentence after nineteen years.”

He removed the drive.

“This contains every Vale crime.”

“Every hidden account.”

“Every person Richard paid.”

“Release it,” Adrian said.

“You would lose everything.”

“Then I lose everything.”

Julian’s expression changed.

He had expected Adrian to protect the empire.

That expectation had driven the entire plan.

“If you release it,” Adrian continued, “the victims get the truth.”

“The employees get a chance to rebuild.”

“And none of us inherit a throne built on bodies.”

Helena stepped forward.

“Give me the drive.”

Julian looked at her.

“You left me with Richard’s enemies.”

“I know.”

“You made me believe revenge was the only inheritance I had.”

“I know.”

She moved closer.

“I cannot change what I did.”

“But I can stand beside you when you face what you did.”

For a moment, Julian looked like a frightened boy rather than a mastermind.

Then a laser dot appeared on his chest.

Charles had escaped the chapel.

He stood on an adjacent balcony with a rifle.

“He will destroy us all,” Charles shouted.

He fired.

Helena moved in front of Julian.

The bullet struck her shoulder.

Julian caught her before she fell.

Adrian tackled Charles as officers stormed the balcony.

The rifle slid across the roof.

Nora pressed both hands against Helena’s wound.

Julian stared at his mother’s blood.

“You protected me.”

“I should have done it sooner.”

He surrendered the drive.

Then the chapel bell rang.

A hidden mechanism released documents from the bell tower.

Pages scattered through the rain.

Julian had created a physical backup.

One page landed beside Adrian.
