CHAPTER 7: THE SECRET FROM NORA’S PAST

For the first time in years, Nora Delgado felt like she belonged somewhere.
The Whitaker mansion was no longer just a workplace.
It was a place filled with small moments she never expected.
Hazel asking her advice about school.
Brooke letting her brush her hair.
Ivy showing her drawings she had hidden for months.
June finally sleeping without a nightlight.
Cora and Mae competing to see who could make Jonathan laugh first.
And Lena…
Lena had started calling her “Nora” instead of “Miss Nora.”
It was a tiny change.
But Nora knew tiny changes mattered.
Children didn’t rebuild trust overnight.
They built it one safe moment at a time.
But while Nora was helping the Whitaker family heal…
someone was digging into the parts of her life she had tried to forget.
Three days after the newspaper scandal, Jonathan received a message from Steven.
We found something about Nora. You need to see this.
Jonathan opened the attached file.
At first, he expected another attempt to damage her reputation.
But as he read, his expression changed.
Not anger.
Confusion.
The file contained information about Nora’s childhood.
Her parents.
Her education.
Her previous jobs.
Everything looked normal.
Until one page.
A hospital record.
A fire report.
Jonathan stared at the screen.
Then he looked toward the kitchen where Nora was helping Lena bake cookies.
Something about the report felt wrong.
Later that evening, he approached her carefully.
“Nora?”
She looked up.
“Yes?”
“Can I ask you something?”
She smiled.
“Of course.”
He hesitated.
“Your sister.”
The smile disappeared.
Only slightly.
But Jonathan noticed.
“You had a sister?”
Nora became quiet.
“Yes.”
“What happened?”
For a moment, she didn’t answer.
Then she sat down.
“My sister Sofia was eight years old.”
Jonathan listened.
“She was my best friend.”
Nora looked at the floor.
“One night, there was a fire in our apartment.”
Her voice became softer.
“I survived.”
A pause.
“She didn’t.”
Jonathan felt his chest tighten.
“I’m sorry.”
Nora nodded.
“After that, I spent years wondering why I lived and she didn’t.”
She looked toward the girls playing nearby.
“That’s why I understand children who are angry.”
Jonathan said nothing.
Because now everything made sense.
Nora wasn’t just helping his daughters because she studied psychology.
She understood them because she had been one of them.
A child who lost someone.
A child who carried guilt.
A child who needed someone to stay.
But there was something Jonathan didn’t know.
And Victoria did.
The fire report wasn’t the whole story.
That night, Victoria met with a private investigator.
“You’re sure?”
The investigator nodded.
“Yes.”
“And the connection?”
He handed her a folder.
“It’s real.”
Victoria opened it.
Inside was a photograph.
A young Nora.
A hospital.
And a familiar name.
Maribel Whitaker.
Victoria’s smile slowly returned.
“So she wasn’t a stranger after all.”
The investigator looked confused.
“What do you mean?”
Victoria closed the folder.
“Nora Delgado didn’t enter Jonathan Whitaker’s life by accident.”
She looked toward the mansion.
“She was connected to this family long before she ever cleaned that kitchen.”
The next morning, Jonathan found Nora standing in the garden.
She looked peaceful.
Too peaceful.
He almost told her about the investigation.
Almost.
But then he saw Lena run toward her.
“Nora!”
The little girl hugged her tightly.
And Jonathan stopped.
Because whatever secret existed…
whatever connection someone was trying to expose…
he knew one thing.
Nora had saved his daughters.
But now he needed to discover whether Nora had also been carrying a secret.
May you like
A secret connected to the woman he had loved and lost.
Maribel.
