CHAPTER 10: MARIBEL’S FINAL CONFESSION

The Whitaker mansion had never felt so heavy.

For weeks, the family had been rebuilding.

They had laughed again.

They had eaten dinner together.

They had started believing that the worst days were behind them.

But one sentence had changed everything.

The fire was not accidental.

Nora sat in the living room surrounded by documents.

Every piece of paper felt like a piece of a life she thought she understood.

Her sister Sofia.

Her parents.

The night everything changed.

All these years, Nora believed she had lost Sofia because of a terrible accident.

Now she had to face a terrifying possibility.

Someone had taken her sister away.

Jonathan watched her from across the room.

He recognized that look.

It was the same look he saw in his daughters after Maribel died.

The look of someone searching for answers nobody could give.

“Nora.”

She looked up.

“I’m okay.”

Jonathan knew she wasn’t.

But he also knew something important.

People who had suffered enough didn’t always need someone to tell them they were strong.

Sometimes they needed someone to sit beside them.

So he did.

The next morning, Evelyn returned to the mansion.

She brought another box.

“This belonged to Maribel.”

Jonathan stared.

“Where did you get it?”

“She gave it to me before she became sick.”

Nora looked confused.

“Why didn’t you bring it before?”

Evelyn looked down.

“Because Maribel asked me not to.”

“Why?”

“She wanted to be sure the truth would only come out when the family was ready.”

Jonathan opened the box.

Inside were notebooks.

Photos.

And one small recording device.

Nora looked at it.

“What is that?”

Evelyn’s face became serious.

“Your mother’s voice.”

Everyone froze.

They gathered in the office.

Jonathan pressed the button.

For a moment, there was only static.

Then…

Maribel’s voice filled the room.

Soft.

Warm.

Familiar.

“Jonathan…”

His eyes immediately filled.

Hearing her voice after eighteen months felt impossible.

“If you are listening to this, then something happened that prevented me from telling you everything myself.”

A pause.

“I need you to know something about Nora Delgado.”

Nora held her breath.

“Years ago, I learned about a fire that changed a little girl’s life forever.”

Maribel continued.

“I discovered that the official report was incomplete.”

Jonathan looked at Nora.

“I searched for answers because I couldn’t ignore it.”

The recording continued.

“But what I found scared me.”

A moment of silence.

“Someone with influence covered up what happened.”

Everyone became still.

Then Maribel said the words nobody expected.

“And that person was connected to someone inside our circle.”

Jonathan’s face changed.

Inside their circle?

Someone they knew?

Someone close?

The recording continued.

“I tried to investigate quietly because I didn’t want to put my family in danger.”

A deep sadness entered her voice.

“I failed.”

The recording stopped.

Nobody moved.

That afternoon, Jonathan confronted Victoria.

He found her at a charity event she was attending.

The moment she saw his face, she knew.

“You found the recording.”

Jonathan stared at her.

“You knew.”

Victoria remained silent.

“You knew Maribel was investigating.”

Still silence.

“You knew Nora was connected to her.”

Victoria finally sighed.

“Jonathan…”

“No.”

His voice was cold.

“For once, tell me the truth.”

Victoria looked at him.

“I knew Maribel was searching.”

“And?”

“And I knew she was getting close.”

Jonathan’s eyes hardened.

“Close to what?”

Victoria looked away.

“The people who caused the fire.”

A terrible silence followed.

Jonathan felt anger rising.

“You were involved?”

Victoria laughed softly.

“No.”

Then she stepped closer.

“But I knew someone who was.”

“Who?”

Victoria smiled.

“Your wife never finished her investigation.”

She handed him an envelope.

“The final page was missing.”

Jonathan opened it.

Inside was one sentence written by Maribel.

The person responsible is someone Jonathan trusts completely.

His blood turned cold.

Someone he trusted.

Someone close.

Someone inside his world.

That night, Jonathan returned home with the envelope.

But before he could tell Nora anything…

the mansion alarm suddenly went off.

The girls screamed upstairs.

Jonathan ran.

Smoke filled the hallway.

A small fire had started near Maribel’s old room.

And on the floor beside the flames…

was the missing final page of Maribel’s investigation.

Someone wanted them to find it.

Someone wanted them scared.

May you like

Someone wanted them to know…

the past was not finished.
