CHAPTER 12: THE BROTHER WHO BETRAYED THEM

Jonathan Whitaker spent the entire night awake.
The documents were still on his desk.
The numbers were still there.
The evidence was still there.
But he refused to believe it.
Not because Daniel was innocent.
Because accepting the truth meant accepting something much worse.
His own brother had betrayed him.
The same brother who held his daughters when they were born.
The same brother who stood beside him after Maribel died.
The same brother who promised:
“I’ll help you protect this family.”
Jonathan looked at the photograph on his desk.
Six little girls.
Maribel smiling.
Daniel standing behind them.
A perfect family picture.
Except now he wondered how much of it had been fake.
The next morning, Nora found Jonathan sitting alone in the kitchen.
A cup of coffee sat untouched in front of him.
“You didn’t sleep.”
It wasn’t a question.
Jonathan looked up.
“No.”
She sat across from him.
“Because of Daniel?”
He nodded.
“I keep thinking about every moment.”
His voice was quiet.
“Every conversation.”
“Every time he came here.”
Nora listened.
“He knew my daughters were suffering.”
Jonathan looked toward the stairs.
“He knew I was struggling.”
A pause.
“And he still did something that hurt them.”
Nora leaned forward.
“Jonathan.”
He looked at her.
“Don’t make a decision because you’re hurt.”
“What should I do?”
“Find the truth.”
Simple.
But difficult.
Because sometimes the truth was the thing people feared most.
That afternoon, Nora noticed something strange.
June was sitting alone in the garden.
The little girl was holding a small box.
“What’s that?”
June looked nervous.
“Something I found.”
Nora sat beside her.
“Can I see?”
Slowly, June opened the box.
Inside were old keys.
And a small flash drive.
Nora frowned.
“Where did you get this?”
“Uncle Daniel gave it to me.”
Her heart stopped.
“When?”
“Before the fire.”
Nora looked at the child.
“Did he tell you what it was?”
June shook her head.
“He said if anything bad happened, I should give it to someone who loves us.”
Nora immediately called Jonathan.
Minutes later, everyone gathered in the office.
Jonathan stared at the flash drive.
“Why would Daniel give this to June?”
Nobody had an answer.
Steven connected it to the computer.
A folder appeared.
Only one file.
Maribel_Final_Research.
Jonathan stopped breathing.
He opened it.
Inside were photographs.
Documents.
Emails.
And one shocking discovery.
Daniel wasn’t the person who caused the fire.
He was investigating it.
Nora looked confused.
“What?”
Jonathan continued reading.
Daniel had discovered someone was hiding evidence.
Someone powerful.
Someone who had access to the investigation.
And then they found the last message.
A message Daniel wrote to Maribel.
I know who is responsible. But if they discover I know, they will come after everyone.
Jonathan felt sick.
Because all this time…
he thought Daniel betrayed them.
But Daniel had been afraid.
Suddenly, the office phone rang.
Jonathan answered.
“Hello?”
No response.
Only breathing.
Then a voice.
“You should have left the past buried.”
Jonathan stood.
“Who is this?”
The voice laughed softly.
“Someone who warned your wife.”
The call ended.
Everyone looked at each other.
Nora whispered:
“They know we found the files.”
That evening, Daniel returned.
But this time, Jonathan didn’t accuse him.
He waited.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Daniel looked exhausted.
“Because I promised Maribel.”
Jonathan froze.
“She asked me to protect you.”
“From who?”
Daniel looked toward the window.
“From someone inside your company.”
Jonathan stared.
“My company?”
Daniel nodded.
“Someone who had access to financial records. Someone who could hide money. Someone who knew how to manipulate people.”
A terrible thought appeared.
“Victoria?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He looked at Jonathan.
“Someone much closer.”
The room went silent.
“Who?”
Daniel hesitated.
Then said the name.
A name nobody expected.
A name that changed everything.
“Steven.”
Jonathan stepped back.
His assistant.
His closest employee.
The person he trusted with everything.
“No.”
Daniel nodded slowly.
“I wanted to believe I was wrong.”
“But?”
Daniel looked at him.
“But Maribel wasn’t investigating Daniel Whitaker.”
He pointed toward the company files.
“She was investigating the person who helped build your empire.”
That night, Jonathan sat in his office.
The man he trusted most.
The woman who betrayed him.
The brother he almost accused.
Everything he believed was falling apart.
But one thing remained clear.
Someone had tried to destroy his family.
And now Jonathan Whitaker was done waiting.
May you like
He was going to find the truth.
No matter who it hurt.
