CHAPTER 5: THE WOMAN WHO WANTED THE WHITAKER FORTUNE

Three weeks passed.

And for the first time since Maribel’s death, the Whitaker mansion began to breathe again.

The flowers in the garden were growing back.

The walls were slowly being cleaned.

The laughter of children replaced the silence that once filled every hallway.

But the biggest change wasn’t the house.

It was Jonathan.

The man who once left before breakfast now woke up early to make pancakes.

The man who used to attend meetings during family dinners now turned off his phone.

The man who believed money could solve everything finally understood that his daughters never wanted a bigger house.

They wanted their father.

Nora watched the transformation quietly.

She never took credit.

Whenever someone praised her, she simply smiled.

“The girls did the hard part.”

But not everyone was happy.

Across town, inside a luxury apartment overlooking downtown San Diego, a woman stared at photos of the Whitaker mansion.

Her name was Victoria Hale.

Thirty-two years old.

Beautiful.

Elegant.

Ambitious.

And for the last year, she had been waiting.

Waiting for Jonathan Whitaker to become vulnerable.

Victoria had met Jonathan months before Maribel died.

She worked as a consultant for one of his company’s major projects.

She knew how powerful he was.

She knew how lonely he was.

And she believed she knew exactly what he needed.

A woman who could bring order back into his life.

But Maribel’s death had changed everything.

Jonathan disappeared.

He stopped attending social events.

He rejected every invitation.

He ignored every attempt Victoria made to get closer.

Until now.

Victoria looked at the picture of Nora leaving the Whitaker mansion.

A simple woman.

Cheap clothes.

Old shoes.

Someone who didn’t belong in Jonathan’s world.

Her assistant, Claire, stood nearby.

“She’s been there almost a month.”

Victoria’s expression remained calm.

“And Jonathan trusts her?”

“More than anyone.”

Victoria laughed softly.

“That’s impossible.”

Claire handed her a folder.

“She has no family money. No wealthy connections. She’s just a housekeeper.”

Victoria opened the file.

University student.

Child psychology studies.

Previous work with children.

A small apartment.

A simple life.

Nothing threatening.

And yet…

Victoria’s eyes narrowed.

“She’s dangerous.”

Claire looked confused.

“Dangerous?”

“She gave him something I couldn’t.”

“What?”

Victoria looked back at the mansion photo.

“His attention.”

That evening, Victoria arrived at the Whitaker mansion.

Jonathan opened the door himself.

The moment he saw her, his expression changed.

“Victoria.”

“Jonathan.”

She smiled warmly.

“I heard the family is doing better.”

He nodded.

“They are.”

“I’m glad.”

She stepped inside.

Then she noticed something.

The house felt different.

Alive.

Pictures of Maribel were still there.

But now there were new drawings from the girls.

A family portrait hung on the refrigerator.

Six children.

One father.

And in the corner…

a small figure labeled:

Nora.

Victoria forced a smile.

“How sweet.”

Jonathan followed her eyes.

“The girls made it.”

“Interesting.”

“What?”

Victoria looked at him carefully.

“I just didn’t know you allowed employees to become this involved.”

Jonathan’s expression hardened slightly.

“She helped my daughters.”

Victoria smiled.

“Of course.”

The words sounded polite.

But Jonathan heard the warning underneath.

Later that night, Victoria met with Claire again.

“She has to go.”

Claire hesitated.

“Are you sure?”

Victoria looked toward the Whitaker mansion.

“If Nora stays, Jonathan will remember what he actually needs.”

“And that’s bad?”

Victoria smiled coldly.

“For my plans? Yes.”

She placed a folder on the table.

Inside were documents.

Old documents.

Documents connected to Maribel’s death.

“I spent a year trying to become part of this family.”

Her fingers tapped the papers.

“I won’t let a housekeeper destroy everything.”

The next morning, Nora arrived at the mansion.

But something was different.

The security guard looked nervous.

Jonathan looked angry.

And on the dining table sat a newspaper.

The headline was impossible to ignore.

“BILLIONAIRE WIDOWER’S NEW HOUSEKEEPER QUESTIONED AFTER FAMILY SCANDAL.”

Nora slowly picked up the paper.

Her heart sank.

Because beneath the headline was a picture of her.

Someone had decided to attack her.

And whoever did it…

knew exactly where to strike.
