CHAPTER 6: THE LIE THAT ALMOST DESTROYED NORA

The newspaper sat on the dining table like a weapon.

Nobody spoke.

The six girls stood behind Jonathan, watching his reaction.

They had seen their father angry before.

But this was different.

This wasn’t the cold frustration of a businessman losing a deal.

This was the anger of a father protecting someone who had protected his children.

Jonathan picked up the newspaper.

The headline screamed across the page.

“MYSTERY WOMAN ENTERS BILLIONAIRE’S HOME — QUESTIONS RAISED ABOUT HER INTENTIONS.”

Below it was a picture of Nora entering the Whitaker mansion.

The article claimed she had manipulated her way into the family.

It suggested she was using the children to gain access to Jonathan’s fortune.

It questioned why a simple housekeeper was suddenly so important to one of San Diego’s richest men.

Nora stood silently.

She had expected challenges.

She had expected the girls to reject her.

She had even expected Jonathan’s family to question her.

But this?

This felt personal.

Jonathan looked at her.

“Nora…”

She forced a small smile.

“It’s okay.”

“No.”

His voice was firm.

“It’s not.”

She looked down.

“Maybe I should leave.”

Six voices immediately answered.

“No.”

Everyone turned.

Hazel stepped forward.

“You’re not leaving.”

Jonathan looked at his daughter.

Hazel swallowed.

“She’s the first person who stayed.”

Brooke nodded.

“She doesn’t treat us like problems.”

Ivy crossed her arms.

“She actually listens.”

The twins grabbed each other’s hands.

“She makes pancakes.”

Even Lena hugged Nora’s leg.

“Don’t go.”

Nora’s eyes softened.

But she looked at Jonathan.

“This is bigger than me.”

He shook his head.

“No. It isn’t.”

He placed the newspaper down.

“This is about someone trying to hurt my family.”

The word surprised everyone.

Family.

He didn’t say employees.

He didn’t say outsiders.

He included Nora.

Later that morning, Jonathan called Steven.

“I want everything.”

Steven looked confused.

“Everything?”

“Find who started this.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And check every connection.”

Jonathan looked toward the girls.

“Someone is trying to destroy the only good thing that has happened here.”

Meanwhile, across town, Victoria watched the news coverage.

She smiled.

The first attack had worked.

Or at least she thought it had.

Her plan was simple.

Create doubt.

Make Jonathan question Nora.

Make Nora feel unwelcome.

Then she would disappear.

But Victoria underestimated one thing.

Nora wasn’t the same woman who arrived at the mansion three weeks ago.

The Whitaker children had changed her too.

That afternoon, Nora found Hazel sitting alone in the garden.

“Thinking?”

Hazel shrugged.

“You’re going to hate me.”

Nora sat beside her.

“Why?”

“Because everyone who gets close to us gets hurt.”

Nora looked at the girl.

“Hazel.”

“My mom died.”

Her voice cracked.

“Then Dad disappeared into work.”

She looked at the house.

“Then all those nannies came and left.”

A tear formed in her eyes.

“So I thought maybe if we made everyone leave first… it wouldn’t hurt as much.”

Nora stayed quiet.

Because Hazel had finally said the truth.

“You weren’t trying to be cruel.”

Hazel wiped her face quickly.

“I was.”

“No.”

Nora shook her head.

“You were trying to survive.”

That evening, Jonathan found Nora in the kitchen.

“I owe you something.”

She smiled.

“What?”

“The truth.”

He took a deep breath.

“I hired those nannies because I was afraid.”

Nora looked at him.

“Afraid of what?”

“That I couldn’t be enough for them.”

His voice lowered.

“So I hired people who knew what they were doing.”

He looked around the kitchen.

“But I never realized my daughters didn’t need an expert.”

A pause.

“They needed their father.”

Nora smiled softly.

“That’s something you can still give them.”

Jonathan looked at her.

For a moment, neither spoke.

There was a quiet understanding between them.

Not romance.

Not yet.

Something deeper.

Respect.

Trust.

A bond built from two people trying to save broken children.

But outside the mansion gates…

Victoria watched the lights inside the house.

She saw Jonathan laughing with his daughters.

She saw Nora standing beside them.

And she realized something.

The newspaper attack had failed.

So she would need a stronger weapon.

Something that would make Jonathan question Nora forever.

She opened an old file.

Inside was a document with one name written across the top.

Nora Delgado.

May you like

Victoria smiled.

“Let’s see how long you survive when he learns the truth.”
