CHAPTER 9 – The Recording

The room fell completely silent.

Even the forensic technicians stopped working as Jonathan Sterling's voice crackled through the old recorder.

There was a faint hum in the background, followed by the sound of a door closing.

Then Jonathan spoke again.

"I don't know how much time I have."

His breathing was uneven.

"If you're hearing this, Arthur... I need you to listen until the end."

Arthur felt his chest tighten.

It was the first time he had heard his father's voice in over twenty-five years.

"I married Evelyn because I admired her strength," Jonathan continued. "But somewhere along the way... strength became obsession."

Arthur glanced toward his mother.

For the first time that morning, she looked visibly unsettled.

Jonathan continued.

"She believes love must be earned through fear."

Clara quietly wiped away another tear.

"I tried to change her."

A long pause.

"I failed."

Static interrupted the recording for several seconds before Jonathan spoke again.

"I began documenting everything."

The sound of papers rustling filled the room.

"I hired a private investigator after three of Arthur's nannies resigned within six months."

Arthur frowned.

He barely remembered any of them.

"They all described the same behavior."

Another pause.

"Emotional abuse."

"Isolation."

"Humiliation."

"And when someone challenged Evelyn..."

His father's voice became almost a whisper.

"They disappeared from our lives."

Arthur felt cold.

He had always believed the frequent changes in household staff were simply part of living in a wealthy family.

Now every memory looked different.

Jonathan continued.

"I planned to file for divorce."

Arthur looked up sharply.

Divorce?

His father had never mentioned that.

"I was meeting attorney Richard Collins tomorrow morning."

Sergeant Brooks quickly wrote the name into his notebook.

Jonathan took a slow breath.

"If anything happens before that meeting..."

The room seemed to stop breathing.

"It was not an accident."

Silence.

The recorder clicked softly.

Then another voice suddenly entered the recording.

A woman's voice.

Evelyn.

"Jonathan?"

Her tone was calm.

Too calm.

The recording captured footsteps.

A chair scraping across the floor.

Jonathan lowered his voice.

"I'm ending this."

Evelyn laughed.

"No, dear."

A long, chilling pause followed.

Then came the final words recorded before the device abruptly shut off.

"You don't leave this family."

Click.

The recorder stopped.

No one moved.

No one spoke.

Arthur slowly lifted his eyes toward his mother.

Evelyn's face had gone completely pale.

Brooks finally broke the silence.

"Mrs. Sterling..."

He stepped closer.

"Did your husband ever make it to that meeting with Attorney Collins?"

Evelyn said nothing.

Arthur answered instead.

"He died in a single-car crash before sunrise."

Brooks nodded slowly.

"I think it's time we reopened that case."

As another officer entered carrying a freshly printed background report, he spoke with quiet urgency.

"Sergeant..."

Brooks looked over.

"We found something else."

"What is it?"

The officer handed him a file.

"The original accident investigation."

Brooks opened it.

His expression changed instantly.

One crucial page was missing.

The page identifying who had been first at the crash scene.
