CHAPTER 6 – The Diary of Silence

Arthur held the notebook as though it were made of glass.

Its faded blue cover was ordinary.

The words inside were not.

Sergeant Brooks asked quietly, "May I?"

Arthur nodded and handed him the diary.

The officer carefully turned the pages while another began photographing Clara's injuries.

Every entry carried a date.

Every page documented another act of humiliation.

April 8

She told me I wasn't allowed to eat until Leo stopped crying.

April 19

She locked me out of the nursery for two hours. I could hear my baby screaming, but she wouldn't let me inside.

May 2

Arthur called during lunch. I wanted to tell him everything. Evelyn stood behind me smiling. I lied and said everything was fine.

May 27

She said if I ever told Arthur, she would convince him I was mentally unstable and have Leo taken away from me.

The room became unbearably quiet.

Brooks slowly closed the notebook.

"This is important evidence."

Arthur couldn't speak.

His throat felt tight.

Every word Clara had written was another reminder of his absence.

Another reminder that while he had been negotiating billion-dollar contracts across the world, his wife had been documenting her own nightmare in secret.

He looked at Clara.

"Why didn't you leave?"

Fresh tears rolled down her face.

"I tried."

Arthur frowned.

"What do you mean?"

Clara looked toward the hallway as if reliving the memory.

"Three months ago, I packed a suitcase."

She swallowed hard.

"Evelyn saw me."

Arthur's stomach sank.

"She took Leo from my arms."

Clara wrapped both hands around herself.

"She said if I walked out that front door, she'd tell everyone I abandoned my baby."

Arthur felt sick.

"I believed her."

Evelyn finally spoke.

"Oh, don't be so dramatic."

Everyone turned toward her.

"I was protecting my grandson."

"You terrorized his mother," Arthur snapped.

"I was preparing her."

"For what?"

"For reality."

Brooks stepped between them.

"Mrs. Sterling, I advise you not to say anything further."

Evelyn ignored him.

"Our family wasn't built by weakness. Arthur's father understood that."

Arthur's expression darkened.

"My father?"

She nodded.

"He believed discipline creates excellence."

Arthur stared at her.

For years, Evelyn had spoken of his late father as the perfect husband and father.

Tonight, something about her words felt rehearsed.

Almost defensive.

Then Maria quietly cleared her throat.

"There is... something else."

Everyone looked at her.

She hesitated.

"I found another notebook."

Arthur frowned.

"Another one?"

Maria nodded.

"It doesn't belong to Mrs. Clara."

She looked directly at Evelyn.

"It belongs to Mr. Sterling's father."

The room froze.

Even Evelyn's calm expression cracked for the first time.

Her face turned pale.

"Where did you find it?" Arthur asked.

Maria lowered her voice.

"In the old attic."

Arthur slowly looked toward his mother.

She wasn't angry.

She looked...

Terrified.

And that terrified Arthur even more.

May you like

Because whatever had been hidden in his father's notebook...

Evelyn had spent years making sure no one ever found it.
