CHAPTER 1 – The Camera Never Lies

The conference room on the forty-third floor had finally fallen silent.

Rows of financial projections glowed across the massive screen while half-empty coffee cups littered the polished walnut table. Outside, the skyline shimmered beneath a blanket of rain, and the city looked strangely peaceful from this height.

Arthur Sterling rubbed his tired eyes before checking the time.

2:03 a.m.

The Vance Merger would be signed before sunrise if every final document cleared legal review. It was the largest acquisition of his career, worth nearly three billion dollars, yet he couldn't concentrate.

His phone vibrated.

No message.

Just another notification from the Sentinel Eye system.

Sound detected in Nursery.

Leo was crying again.

Arthur sighed.

His son had cried every night for weeks whenever Arthur worked late. Clara insisted babies simply went through difficult phases, but something about the pattern never made sense.

He tapped the notification.

The live video filled his screen.

At first, nothing looked unusual.

Moonlight filtered through the nursery curtains, casting pale shadows across the room. Leo kicked helplessly inside his crib, his tiny face red from crying.

Then the bedroom door swung open.

Evelyn entered.

Perfectly dressed.

Perfectly composed.

Even at two in the morning, her silver hair was immaculate, her silk robe pressed without a wrinkle.

She didn't walk toward the baby.

She looked directly at the hallway first, making certain no one else was awake.

Arthur frowned.

Then Clara appeared.

She wasn't walking willingly.

Evelyn had a fist wrapped around her wrist.

"You depend on my son," Evelyn whispered through clenched teeth, her voice low enough that only the camera microphone could capture it. "And you still think you have the right to complain?"

Clara stumbled.

"I... I'm trying..."

"Trying?" Evelyn hissed. "You call this trying?"

She shoved Clara against the crib.

Leo screamed louder.

Arthur shot upright.

"What the hell..."

Clara immediately reached for her baby, but Evelyn slapped her hand away.

"No."

The single word froze the room.

"You will stand there," Evelyn continued coldly. "You will learn exactly what happens when weak women fail this family."

Clara's shoulders trembled violently.

"I haven't slept in three days..."

"Good."

Arthur's heartbeat pounded inside his ears.

His mother...

No.

There had to be context.

There had to be something he wasn't seeing.

Then Evelyn leaned close enough for the camera to capture every word.

"Every time Arthur leaves this house," she whispered, "that child stays awake until you understand your place."

Arthur felt every drop of blood drain from his face.

Evelyn reached into the crib.

For one horrifying second, Arthur thought she was about to comfort Leo.

Instead...

She pinched the baby's tiny leg.

Hard.

Leo's cry exploded into frantic screams.

Arthur's chair crashed backward as he jumped to his feet.

"What are you doing?"

His own voice echoed through the empty boardroom.

No one answered.

On the screen, Clara burst into tears.

"Please... please don't hurt him anymore."

Evelyn smiled.

"If you wanted him safe," she said softly, "you should have been a better wife."

Arthur's hands shook so violently that he nearly dropped the phone.

Every explanation he had believed for six months shattered in less than sixty seconds.

His mother wasn't helping his family.

She was destroying it.

Without thinking, Arthur grabbed his car keys and sprinted from the conference room, leaving behind the merger that had consumed two years of his life.

For the first time in years...

May you like

His family mattered more than his fortune.

And he prayed he wasn't already too late.
