CHAPTER 3 – The Locked Door

Arthur didn't bother closing the front door behind him.

It slammed against the wall with a deafening crash that echoed through the twelve-million-dollar mansion. His footsteps thundered across the marble floor as he raced toward the grand staircase.

Leo was still crying.

The sound pierced through the silence like a knife.

"Clara!" Arthur shouted.

No answer.

Only the baby's desperate screams.

He reached the second floor and froze.

The nursery door was locked.

Locked.

His own son's nursery had never been locked before.

Arthur twisted the brass handle.

It wouldn't move.

"Mother!" he roared. "Open this door!"

Silence.

Then Evelyn's calm voice drifted from inside.

"You're home earlier than expected."

Arthur slammed his shoulder against the door.

The solid oak barely shook.

"I said open it!"

"No."

That single word ignited something inside him.

For years, executives, investors, and politicians had feared Arthur Sterling because he never accepted obstacles.

Tonight, the obstacle was his own mother.

He stepped back.

One powerful kick splintered the wooden frame.

A second kick sent the lock flying.

The door burst open.

The scene inside stopped him cold.

Clara was kneeling on the hardwood floor, one arm wrapped protectively around her stomach as if shielding herself from another blow.

Fresh red marks covered her wrist where fingers had dug into her skin.

Leo was back in the crib, crying so hard his tiny face had turned crimson.

Evelyn stood beside the window, perfectly composed, as though Arthur had interrupted an ordinary conversation.

"Oh, Arthur," she said with a faint smile. "There's no need for dramatics."

Arthur walked straight to the crib.

His hands trembled as he lifted Leo into his arms.

The baby stopped crying almost instantly.

Leo buried his tiny face against Arthur's chest, hiccupping between exhausted sobs.

Arthur felt tears sting his own eyes.

"You've been terrified," he whispered.

He turned toward Clara.

She looked thinner than he remembered.

Dark circles surrounded her eyes.

Her lips were cracked.

She couldn't even meet his gaze.

"I'm sorry," she whispered automatically.

Arthur's heart broke.

She was apologizing...

To him.

For being abused.

"What happened here?" he asked softly.

Before Clara could answer, Evelyn stepped forward.

"She's emotionally unstable," she said smoothly. "New mothers often exaggerate everything."

Arthur looked at the bruises on Clara's arm.

Then back at his mother.

"Did you do this?"

Evelyn didn't flinch.

"I corrected her."

Arthur stared.

"Corrected?"

"Someone has to teach her discipline."

Arthur slowly reached into his jacket pocket.

Evelyn smiled confidently.

"Good," she said. "Call the family physician. He'll explain postpartum hysteria."

Arthur pulled out his phone.

"I wasn't planning to call a doctor."

For the first time that night...

Evelyn's smile faded.

Arthur pressed three numbers.

911.

Clara's head snapped upward.

Even Evelyn's confident posture stiffened.

"Arthur," she said quietly, "think very carefully about what you're doing."

"I already have."

The operator answered.

"Nine-one-one. What's your emergency?"

Arthur never looked away from his mother.

"My name is Arthur Sterling," he said clearly. "I need officers and paramedics at my residence immediately."

He took a slow breath before speaking the words he never imagined he would say.

"I believe my mother has been abusing my wife... and my newborn son."

For the first time in decades, Evelyn Sterling looked genuinely afraid.

And Arthur realized something else.

This wasn't the first secret hidden inside his family's walls.

It was only the first one he had uncovered.
