Chapter 8 - The Motel

Police found Sarah’s SUV at 7:02.
Outside a motel near Suffolk.
Eli was inside room 118.
Alive.
Unhurt.
Watching cartoons.
Sarah was gone.
I reached him before the scene was fully processed.
He ran into my arms.
“Mom!”
I held him so tightly he complained.
“Too squishy.”
I loosened my grip.
“Sorry.”
He looked confused.
“Aunt Sarah said we were playing secret trip.”
My chest tightened.
“What happened?”
“She said you had work.”
“Did she hurt you?”
“No.”
“Did anyone?”
“No.”
I believed him.
Dana stayed beside us.
The room contained snacks.
Children’s medicine.
A change of clothes.
A digital camera.
And printed instructions.
One page was titled:
OBSERVATION EVENT.
Underneath were scenarios.
Child left alone for brief period.
Child photographed crying.
Alcohol container visible in background.
Medication placed near child.
Dana’s face turned hard.
“This is staged-evidence planning.”
A half-empty whiskey bottle sat on the counter.
I did not drink whiskey.
Never had.
There was also a prescription bottle with my name.
Sedatives.
The prescription was fake.
But the label looked real.
Sarah had planned to photograph Eli beside manufactured hazards.
Then return him.
Dana looked at me.
“If this had been submitted without context…”
“I know.”
It could have changed everything.
Base security found another item in the motel room.
Sarah’s laptop.
She had not had time to take it.
The browser history showed searches for emergency custody standards.
Military parental fitness.
Trustee removal after neglect finding.
And something else.
Disciplinary consequences for Navy JAG officers under investigation.
She was not only trying to take Eli.
She was trying to damage my career.
At 10:30, Sarah’s Navy access card registered at Naval Station Norfolk.
Security locked the gate.
She was arrested entering the legal building.
When I learned where she had been heading, I understood why.
My personnel file was stored there.
So were my annual evaluations.
My deployment records.
My medical readiness documentation.
Sarah was not running away.
She was going back for something.
The next morning, investigators searched her office.
Behind a locked drawer they found photographs of Eli.
Copies of Daniel’s trust.
My duty records.
And a handwritten list.
At the top:
PRIMARY OBJECTIVE - REMOVE RACHEL AS TRUSTEE.
Below that:
SECONDARY OBJECTIVE - FORCE MEDICAL RETIREMENT.
At the bottom was one final line.
PAYMENT AFTER CUSTODY ORDER: $150,000.

Someone had promised Sarah money.
But it was not Monica.
