Chapter 19 - Promotion Day

Nine months after CPS knocked on my door, I stood in dress whites at Naval Station Norfolk.

Eli sat in the front row swinging his feet.

Captain Hollis stood beside me.

My promotion orders were read aloud.

Commander Rachel Bennett.

Selected for Captain.

Peter’s IG complaint had failed completely.

The investigation found no misconduct.

My record remained intact.

More than intact.

During the investigation, my handling of the CPS matter had been reviewed.

Not because being a good mother earned promotion.

It should not.

But because I had followed reporting rules precisely even when they hurt me personally.

Captain Hollis pinned the new insignia.

Then Eli got permission to pin the second side.

His fingers fumbled.

Everyone laughed.

He whispered.

“Did I do it wrong?”

I crouched.

“No.”

“You did it perfectly.”

Afterward, we took photographs.

Not evidence.

Memories.

That difference mattered to me now.

Ava came.

My father came.

Dana Reyes came in civilian clothes after I invited her.

She hugged me.

“You know, most people don’t invite the CPS investigator to promotion ceremonies.”

I smiled.

“You did your job.”

“So did you.”

“No.”

I looked at Eli.

“I was just his mom.”

That night, we ordered pizza.

Eli spilled soda on my new promotion certificate.

I laughed so hard I cried.

A year earlier, I might have panicked about the paper.

Now I framed it with the stain.

Proof of ordinary life.

At bedtime, Eli asked.

“Are you the boss now?”

“No.”

“Are you a bigger Navy?”

I laughed.

“Something like that.”

He looked serious.

“Can they make you go away?”

The question cut through me.

“Sometimes I may have to travel.”

His face fell.

“But if that happens, we make a plan together.”

“Do I stay with Aunt Monica?”

“No.”

“Grandma?”

“Only if we both decide that someday.”

“Grandpa?”

“Maybe.”

He smiled.

“Dana?”

I laughed.

“I don’t think Dana offers babysitting.”

He giggled.

Then he whispered.

“Mom?”

“Yes?”

“You came back every time.”

I kissed his forehead.

“Every time I could.”

He fell asleep.

My phone buzzed downstairs.

Marcus.

I almost ignored it.

Then I saw the message.

We found something in Daniel’s trust audit.

Call me tonight.

I called immediately.

“What happened?”

Marcus sounded unsettled.

“Monica’s plan wasn’t the first attempt to access Eli’s trust.”

I went still.

“What are you talking about?”

“Someone tried three years ago.”

Three years ago.

Before Monica’s financial crisis.

Before Sarah.

Before Peter resurfaced.

“Who?”

Marcus paused.

May you like

“The authorization request used Daniel’s military credentials.”

My husband had already been dead for a year.
