Chapter 11 - Commander Lang’s Revenge

I reported the complaint myself before anyone could confront me with it.

Captain Hollis looked across his desk.

“You understand you’re entitled to counsel.”

“Yes, sir.”

“And you understand I cannot interfere with the IG process.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good.”

Then he leaned back.

“Rachel.”

“Sir?”

“This is not an order.”

“Stop trying to carry all of this like it’s another case file.”

For one second, the room blurred.

I hated that kindness nearly broke me.

“I’m fine.”

He raised an eyebrow.

Every commander recognizes that lie.

But he let it go.

The IG reviewed Dana’s body-camera footage.

Every CPS visit had been documented.

I had never invoked rank as pressure.

Never threatened.

Never demanded special treatment.

In fact, Dana’s notes repeatedly described me as cooperative.

Peter’s complaint began collapsing.

Then investigators recovered emails between him and Sarah.

PETER:

The CPS angle gets the child.

The IG angle gets the uniform.

SARAH:

Monica is unstable.

She might talk.

PETER:

Then give her enough truth that she believes the plan is hers.

My blood ran cold.

They had manipulated Monica too.

That did not excuse her.

But it explained why her behavior had escalated so quickly.

Another email.

SARAH:

What happens after Rachel loses trustee status?

PETER:

Monica controls the trust.

Jason’s company receives a legitimate loan.

You get your fee.

I destroy Rachel’s promotion.

Everyone wins.

Sarah replied:

Except Rachel.

Peter answered:

That’s the point.

I read it without emotion.

The revenge was almost disappointingly simple.

A man I had investigated decided accountability was humiliation.

So he built a plan to humiliate me back.

But the next email changed everything.

SARAH:

And Eli?

PETER:

Temporary discomfort.

Children recover.

I closed the laptop.

That sentence made this personal in a way losing my career never could.

Temporary discomfort.

My son’s fear was a line item.

Marcus looked at me.

“We can use this.”

“I know.”

“Peter will likely be charged.”

“I know.”

“Rachel.”

I looked at him.

“You’re smiling.”

I had not realized it.

That old courtroom smile.

Not happiness.

Clarity.

“When people finally put the truth in writing, my job gets much easier.”

The criminal investigation expanded.

Sarah’s cooperation deal came first.

She wanted reduced charges.

In exchange, she offered Peter.

Bank records.

Messages.

Audio recordings.

And one document none of us expected.

A draft custody petition Monica had already signed.

It asked the court to declare me psychologically unfit.

The supporting affidavit was sworn by my mother.
