Chapter 20 - Daniel’s Last File

The request was buried in archived trust correspondence.

Someone had attempted to change the successor trustee.

From Monica.

To an entity called Atlantic Family Fiduciary.

The request failed because the signature verification did not match.

At the time, the bank treated it as clerical fraud.

Nobody told me.

Marcus investigated the company.

Atlantic Family Fiduciary no longer existed.

Its registered agent had been Commander Peter Lang.

My stomach dropped.

Peter’s interest in Daniel’s trust began years before his revenge against me.

That meant the conspiracy had roots I had not understood.

Federal investigators reopened his financial history again.

Then they found something in Daniel’s old Navy email archive.

A draft message.

Never sent.

Addressed to me.

Rachel,

I think Lang is using legal-support contracts to move money through family trusts and guardianship accounts.

I need more proof before I report it.

Do not discuss this with anyone yet.

Not even Sarah.

I stopped breathing.

Daniel knew.

Before he died.

My husband had been investigating Peter Lang privately.

And he specifically warned me not to trust Sarah.

Marcus watched my face.

“Did you know about this?”

“No.”

The email was dated twelve days before Daniel’s fatal training accident.

I read it again.

Not even Sarah.

My skin went cold.

Daniel’s death had been investigated thoroughly.

Aircraft mechanical failure.

No evidence of sabotage.

Nothing suspicious.

I refused to invent a conspiracy simply because fear wanted one.

Facts first.

Always.

But another attachment existed.

Daniel had saved a spreadsheet.

Names.

Accounts.

Payments.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Peter Lang.

Another.

Atlantic Family Fiduciary.

Then a third name.

Evelyn Bennett.

My mother.

I stared at the screen.

“That has to be wrong.”

Marcus said nothing.

My mother’s name appeared beside three payments totaling $46,000.

Dates beginning five years earlier.

Before Daniel died.

Before Monica’s scheme.

Before anyone claimed I was unfit.

I called Evelyn.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

Then my father called.

His voice sounded frightened.

“Rachel.”

“Where is Mom?”

“I don’t know.”

“What do you mean?”

“She left this morning.”

“Where?”

“She didn’t say.”

I closed my eyes.

“Dad, did Mom know Peter Lang before all of this?”

Silence.

“Dad.”

“Yes.”

My heart started pounding.

“How?”

Thomas whispered.

“Your mother worked with his wife years ago.”

That was not enough.

“What were the payments?”

“I don’t know.”

“Did Daniel ask her about them?”

Another silence.

Then my father said the sentence that reopened everything I thought I had already survived.

“Rachel, the week before Daniel died, he came here.”

“He and your mother had the worst argument I had ever seen.”

I stood completely still.

“What were they arguing about?”

Thomas took a shaky breath.

“Eli.”

My five-year-old son slept upstairs.

The CPS case was closed.

Monica had been held accountable.

Sarah had confessed.

Peter was in prison.

My career survived.

I had believed the danger came from people who wanted my child after Daniel died.

Now I was looking at evidence that someone had been planning around Eli while Daniel was still alive.

And my own mother had known something about it.

I walked upstairs.

Eli slept with one arm wrapped around his dinosaur.

Peaceful.

Safe.

I stood in the doorway and watched him.

Then I looked at Daniel’s unfinished email on my phone.

Not even Sarah.

For months, I had thought the knock at 4:47 began the story.

It hadn’t.

It only opened a door someone had been trying to unlock for years.

May you like

And this time, I intended to find out who had been standing on the other side.
