Chapter 4 - THE FAMILY BEHIND VICTORIA

Gideon Vale arrived at Blackwood Manor before sunset.

He walked through the front doors as though the police presence were an inconvenience.

He was sixty-eight, silver-haired, and famous for speaking softly while destroying people.

Victoria rose when she saw him.

“Daddy.”

Arthur watched the word transform her.

The confident woman who threatened everyone became a daughter waiting for instructions.

Gideon looked at the officers.

“My daughter has been assaulted and unlawfully detained inside her marital home.”

Detective Collins handed him the search warrant.

“She has not been detained.”

“She has been instructed not to destroy evidence.”

Gideon smiled.

“An accusation from two household children is not evidence.”

Arthur stepped toward him.

“The false deeds carry your notary seal.”

Gideon’s smile did not move.

“My seal has been copied before.”

“Elena’s notebook names you.”

“A dead servant’s diary is not reliable.”

Arthur’s expression hardened.

“She had a name.”

Gideon looked toward Maya and Noah.

His eyes lingered on them with no sympathy.

“Elena was unstable.”

“She developed an inappropriate obsession with family finances.”

Maya spoke.

“You threatened her.”

Gideon turned toward her.

“Children often misunderstand adult discussions.”

Noah reached into the trunk.

He removed a small voice recorder.

“Mom said adults say that when they don’t want children believed.”

He pressed play.

Gideon’s voice filled the cottage.

“You have two children without a father.”

“You should consider how easily they could lose their home.”

Elena answered:

“If Arthur sees the deeds, Victoria goes to prison.”

Gideon said:

“Arthur will not see anything.”

The recording ended.

Gideon stopped smiling.

Detective Collins approached him.

“Would you like to explain?”

“My attorney will.”

“You are an attorney.”

“Not in this matter.”

Arthur looked at Victoria.

“How long has your family been planning this?”

She said nothing.

He continued.

“Before our wedding?”

Victoria’s eyes moved toward her father.

That movement answered him.

The Blackwood marriage had joined two wealthy families.

Arthur believed it began with love.

He met Victoria at a charity auction.

She understood hotels.

Art.

Architecture.

She knew how to calm boardrooms.

She encouraged him after his mother died.

She appeared to respect the employees he considered family.

Now Arthur wondered which moments had been real.

Police searched Gideon’s vehicle.

Inside the trunk were blank property forms carrying Arthur’s digital signature.

A passport in Victoria’s maiden name.

And two plane tickets to Switzerland departing the next morning.

The escape had already been planned.

Gideon was arrested for conspiracy, fraud, and witness intimidation.

Victoria was taken into custody for assault, evidence tampering, and suspected involvement in Elena’s death.

As officers led her through the foyer, she looked at Arthur.

“You will come back to me.”

“No.”

“You don’t know how to run your life without us.”

Arthur glanced toward Maya and Noah.

“I did not know how badly I was running it with you.”

Victoria’s face twisted.

“Those children are using you.”

Arthur answered:

May you like

“They had evidence.”

“You had excuses.”
