Chapter 10 - THE BLACKWOOD BOARD
The Blackwood Hotels board called an emergency meeting.
Investors had seen the arrests.
The forged deeds.
The drugging reports.
The company’s stock fell eighteen percent.
Several directors wanted Arthur removed.
One argued that a man unable to detect a conspiracy inside his own house could not lead an international business.
Arthur agreed.
The board expected him to fight.
He did not.
“I am taking an indefinite leave.”
The director looked surprised.
“You control enough shares to remain.”
“Control is not the same as fitness.”
Arthur proposed an independent investigation.
Every Vale contract would be reviewed.
Household abuse reports would be included.
Employees could testify without retaliation.
The board would appoint an interim chief executive.
Maya’s school trust and Noah’s medical fund would be restored from Arthur’s personal assets until stolen money was recovered.
A director asked:
“Why are children involved in a corporate statement?”
“Because company resources were used to threaten them.”
“Vale Security held their father.”
“Hotel accounts funded false legal documents.”
“My private failure entered corporate systems.”
“We do not get to call it domestic and move on.”
The board approved the leave.
Arthur walked out without his title for the first time in twelve years.
He expected to feel empty.
Instead, he felt frightened and honest.
At home, Maya learned she had been accepted into a private arts school.
Arthur had submitted her old drawings without permission months earlier.
The act had been well-intentioned.
It was still a decision made for her.
He handed her the acceptance letter.
“I should not have applied without asking.”
She looked at the school brochure.
“Do you want me to go?”
“That does not matter.”
“What do you want?”
Maya thought carefully.
“I want to visit.”
They toured the school with Samuel and an independent caseworker.
Maya chose to enroll.
Noah chose to remain at his current school.
The children moved from the staff cottage into a nearby house with Samuel.
Arthur paid nothing directly without court oversight.
Samuel refused charity.
A victim compensation fund covered housing and education.
