Chapter 19 - VICTORIA’S LETTER
Victoria wrote to Arthur from prison.
For years, he returned every letter unopened.
On the fifth anniversary of Elena’s conviction, one envelope arrived addressed to Maya.
Arthur forwarded it to her attorney without reading it.
Maya chose to open it.
Victoria wrote:
I see your paintings in magazines.
You have built a career from destroying my life.
Maya stopped reading.
No apology followed.
No mention of Elena.
No mention of Noah.
Victoria still believed consequences had been done to her.
Maya placed the letter inside her exhibition archive.
She wrote one response.
My mother built the truth.
You destroyed your own life trying to bury it.
Do not write again.
Victoria obeyed.
Perhaps because prison rules required it.
Perhaps because the message offered no emotional door to enter.
Arthur later asked whether Maya forgave her.
Maya looked surprised.
“Why does everyone ask that?”
“I don’t know.”
“Maybe they want stories to end cleanly.”
“Do you?”
“No.”
“I want them to end honestly.”
