Chapter 3: The Screens

The music stopped at 4:17 p.m.
Every chandelier remained illuminated, but the enormous screens behind the wedding stage suddenly turned black.
Guests looked around in confusion.
Daniel rushed back into the ballroom.
“Turn those off!” he shouted at the technicians.
None of them moved.
The Carter Trust controlled the venue, the security system, and every electronic device connected to the estate network.
A date appeared on the screens.
MARCH 12 — THE HARTWELL HOTEL
Then a silent security recording began to play.
Daniel entered a hotel elevator at 11:48 p.m.
Vanessa followed him seconds later.
She wore a red coat and carried the same silver handbag resting beside the bridal chair.
The elevator doors closed.
The footage changed.
Daniel and Vanessa walked through a private hotel corridor. Daniel kissed the side of her neck before using his key card to open a suite.
A wave of shocked murmurs spread through the ballroom.
Vanessa’s mother covered her mouth.
Daniel’s younger brother stared at the floor.
Emily watched without expression.
Daniel stormed toward the control station.
“This is illegal!”
Arthur Collins stepped into his path.
“No,” Arthur said. “It was collected during an authorized audit of a Carter-owned property.”
Daniel turned toward Emily.
“You knew?”
“Not until this morning.”
That was true.
Arthur had placed the evidence in Emily’s bridal suite three hours earlier. The folder contained hotel records, financial transfers, photographs, and copies of messages Daniel believed had been deleted.
Emily had read every page while her bridesmaids adjusted her veil.
She had still intended to walk down the aisle.
Not because she planned to marry him.
Because she wanted to know how far he would go when he believed he had already won.
The screen changed again.
A text exchange appeared.
DANIEL: Once she signs after the reception, the trust can’t reverse it.
VANESSA: And what happens to Emily?
DANIEL: She gets the marriage she wanted. We get everything else.
The room erupted.
Vanessa stood so quickly that the bridal chair scraped across the floor.
“You told me those messages were gone.”
Daniel stared at her in disbelief.
“You’re worried about the messages?”
“You promised me this was protected.”
Emily stepped closer.
“So you admit they’re real.”
Vanessa’s lips parted, but no answer came.
Arthur handed Emily a sealed envelope.
“This arrived twenty minutes ago,” he said. “From the private laboratory Daniel hired last week.”
Daniel lunged for it.
Arthur moved the envelope out of reach.
“What laboratory?” Emily asked.
May you like
Arthur lowered his voice.
“The one Daniel paid to create evidence that you were medically unfit to control your own trust.”
