Chapter 2: The Blackwood Clause

Daniel followed Emily into the corridor.

“What did you tell Arthur?”

Emily did not answer.

She bent down, removed one ivory heel, and examined the swollen skin around her ankle.

“Emily.”

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

Guests were beginning to whisper inside the ballroom. The musicians continued playing, but their melody had lost its rhythm.

Vanessa remained seated in the bridal chair.

Daniel reached for Emily’s arm.

She looked at his hand.

He stopped before touching her.

“What is the Blackwood clause?” he asked.

“You signed documents mentioning it.”

“I signed hundreds of documents.”

“That was your choice.”

His jaw tightened.

For eighteen months, Daniel had presented himself as the perfect future husband. He had attended foundation dinners, charmed Emily’s board members, and spoken publicly about combining the Carter and Brooks legacies.

What he rarely mentioned was that Brooks Hospitality was drowning in debt.

Three years of failed expansion had left the company dependent on emergency financing. Banks had begun refusing new credit. Vendors wanted cash in advance. Two hotels were only weeks away from foreclosure.

The marriage was supposed to change everything.

At midnight, after the ceremony, Emily was scheduled to approve the final stage of a financial consolidation between the Carter Heritage Trust and Brooks Hospitality.

Daniel called it a family partnership.

Arthur called it a rescue.

Emily’s late father had called it a potential disaster.

The Blackwood clause was his final protection.

If evidence of financial deception, coercion, or infidelity emerged before the consolidation was complete, Emily could suspend every pending agreement with a single verbal instruction.

That instruction had just been given.

Daniel’s phone vibrated.

Then vibrated again.

He looked down.

Four missed calls from his chief financial officer.

A message appeared beneath them.

Carter Trust has frozen the bridge loan. Call immediately.

The color drained from Daniel’s face.

“What did you do?”

Emily put her shoe back on.

“I stopped giving you things you had not earned.”

Daniel grabbed his phone and called his CFO.

Before anyone answered, another message appeared.

Emergency board meeting called for 8:00 p.m. All Brooks accounts under review.

Daniel looked toward the ballroom, where Vanessa was finally standing.

She no longer looked triumphant.

“What happens now?” Vanessa asked.

Emily’s gaze moved between them.

“Now,” she said, “you explain why the woman sleeping with my fiancé was sitting in my mother’s chair.”

Vanessa froze.

Daniel did not deny it.

That silence was the first confession.

The second was about to arrive on the ballroom screens.
