Chapter 1: The Stolen Seat

Vanessa Reed smiled as she lowered herself into the bridal chair prepared for another woman.

It was not an ordinary chair.

Carved from white oak and covered in ivory silk, it had belonged to Emily Carter’s mother. Fresh gardenias had been woven around its golden frame, and a small silver plaque beneath the armrest carried the words:

For every Carter bride who chooses love without surrendering herself.

Daniel Brooks knew what the chair meant.

He had watched Emily cry when it arrived that morning.

Yet he placed one hand beneath Vanessa’s elbow and another around her waist, helping her sit with a tenderness he had not shown his fiancée once that day.

“Careful,” Daniel whispered. “You shouldn’t be standing too long.”

Vanessa touched his wrist.

Their eyes remained locked one second too long.

Around them, nearly three hundred wedding guests pretended not to notice.

Emily stood near the ballroom entrance, one hand gripping a marble column. Her ankle throbbed beneath the layers of her wedding gown. She had fallen on the west staircase twenty minutes earlier after stepping on something slick.

Daniel had barely looked at her.

He had ordered two attendants to help her up, complained that the delay was ruining the schedule, and then disappeared with Vanessa.

Now Emily understood where he had gone.

Vanessa glanced across the ballroom and found her watching.

Instead of moving, Vanessa leaned deeper into the bridal chair.

A quiet challenge.

A deliberate humiliation.

Daniel finally turned.

“Emily, don’t make this into something,” he said.

She stared at the man she was supposed to marry in less than an hour.

“I haven’t said anything.”

“That’s what worries me,” he replied.

Emily looked past him toward Arthur Collins, her late father’s attorney and the chairman of the Carter Family Trust.

Arthur stood near the musicians, his silver hair perfectly combed, his expression unreadable.

Their eyes met.

Emily lifted her phone.

Arthur’s hand moved slowly toward the inside pocket of his jacket.

Daniel noticed.

“What are you doing?”

Emily pressed Arthur’s name.

When he answered, she spoke only four words.

“Activate the Blackwood clause.”

For the first time that afternoon, Arthur Collins looked afraid.

“Emily,” he said quietly, “once I make this call, there is no wedding to return to.”

Emily watched Daniel place a protective hand on Vanessa’s shoulder.

“I know.”

Then Arthur walked out of the ballroom and made the phone call that threatened something far more valuable than Daniel’s wedding.

Something Daniel believed would belong to him before midnight.
