Chapter 12: Vanessa’s Price
Vanessa wanted immunity from financial prosecution.
She also wanted five million dollars.
Emily stared at her across the damaged bridal suite.
“You helped Daniel deceive me.”
“Yes.”
“You knew he was using my marriage to gain control of my family.”
“Yes.”
“You sat in my mother’s chair because you wanted me to understand that he had chosen you.”
Vanessa’s eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
“And now you want me to pay you?”
“I want enough money to disappear.”
Emily almost laughed.
Instead, she asked what was on the recording.
Vanessa placed her phone on the table.
The audio had been recorded two weeks before the wedding.
Daniel and Richard were arguing inside Richard’s office.
Richard accused Daniel of becoming emotionally attached to Emily.
Daniel denied it.
Then Richard mentioned Thomas Carter.
“You handled Thomas,” Daniel said. “Let me handle his daughter.”
Richard replied, “Thomas only needed one bottle changed. Emily requires more patience.”
Daniel’s voice became quieter.
“And after I control the trust?”
“We transfer the rights, sell the northern land, and let her spend the rest of her life proving she was never ill.”
The recording did not establish exactly who had altered Thomas’s medication.
But it proved both men knew his death was suspicious.
Vanessa stopped the audio.
“I made a copy because I thought Daniel might turn against me.”
“He did.”
“Yes.”
Emily looked at the woman who had helped destroy her wedding.
“You are not receiving five million dollars.”
Vanessa’s face hardened.
“Then you don’t get the original file.”
“I already heard enough to subpoena it.”
“The copy you heard has been edited. The original includes names, dates, and account numbers.”
Emily understood.
Vanessa had protected herself carefully.
Arthur advised Emily to refuse the deal. Paying Vanessa would look like rewarding betrayal.
Agent Hayes offered limited protection but could not guarantee immunity.
Emily considered the thousands of employees whose futures remained uncertain.
The recording might help recover the stolen offshore money. It might also reveal what happened to her father.
“What will you do with the money?” Emily asked.
“Start over somewhere no one knows me.”
“You think money erases what you did?”
“No.”
Vanessa met her eyes.
“I think money makes survival more comfortable.”
Emily agreed to pay one million dollars through a legal whistleblower settlement, but only after the original recording was authenticated and all hidden accounts were identified.
The decision leaked before sunrise.
By breakfast, social media had turned against her.
