Chapter 4 – A Widow's Promise
The police escorted everyone to headquarters to take formal statements.
Noah sat quietly in the waiting area, holding an ice pack against his bruised cheek while Sarah completed her interview.
Detective Emily Carter switched on the recorder.
"Mrs. Carter, tell us everything."
Sarah stared through the window for several seconds.
"My husband, Michael, believed numbers never lie."
She smiled sadly.
"He worked eighteen years for Holloway Financial."
"He trusted Richard Holloway?"
"At first."
Sarah folded her trembling hands.
"Then Michael discovered secret accounts, fake charities, offshore transfers, and payments made to public officials."
Detective Carter wrote quickly.
"What happened next?"
"He told Richard he was going to report everything."
Sarah swallowed hard.
"Three days later, Michael died in what investigators called a highway accident."
"You never believed that?"
"I buried my husband."
She paused.
"But I never buried the truth."
Sarah explained how Michael had secretly copied thousands of internal files onto a USB drive before his death.
"He told me, 'If anything happens to me, protect Noah... and protect this.'"
Detective Carter leaned back.
"Why wait all these years?"
"I was waiting for someone inside the company to come forward."
"No one did?"
"They were either bought... or terrified."
Meanwhile, across town, Richard sat alone in his penthouse office.
His hands shook as he dialed a private number.
"It happened," he whispered.
A deep voice answered.
"The drive?"
"She gave it to the police."
Several seconds of silence followed.
Finally, the voice spoke again.
"Then we have a bigger problem."
Richard closed his eyes.
"What do we do?"
The reply was cold.
"You make sure that evidence never reaches federal investigators."
The call ended.
